Site Clearance
The very fi
rst step is site clearance w hich involves rem ovalof grass and
vegetation along w ith any other objections w hich m ight be there in the
site location.
Excavation
H ow To B uild a B uilding Foundation
A structuralengineer w illbe needed to determ ine the depth
of the excavation.A llsurface soilneeds to be rem oved to
expose the soilthat is com pacted enough to bear the w eight
of the building. The depth w illvary per building. The top of
the footing m ust be below the frost line as this prevents the
concrete from cracking w hen the freeze-thaw cycle occurs in
the soilsurrounding the building.
Footings
Isolated Footing
A footing is a poured concrete pathw ay thatis used to spread the w eightofthe building from the foundation w alls to the soil. They are w iderthan the
foundation w alls thatthey are supporting and form the perim eterofthe building. In som e instances, there are additionalfootings added inside the
perim eterto supportload-bearing w alls.
Sub Slab
G enerally, plum bing lines are run from the street to the
buildings basem ent by going over or even under the
footing. This is even the case for buildings that have their
ow n individualsew age facility or drain fi
eld.These lines are
covered w ith a poured concrete slab.

FO U N D ATIO N
The foundation is the w allon w hich the fi

w illhave a craw lspace,or tall- if you w illhave a
basem ent.

Bricks and blocks are com ponents of durable m asonry construction in
w hich uniform ly shaped individualunits are laid in courses w ith m ortar

w ith good com pressive strength form ed into units that can be lifted and
handled by a single w orker.M aterials used can includebrick,stone(e.g.

Brickw ork is usually left exposed for its aesthetic qualities and blockw ork
is usually rendered, but m ost bricks and blocks can be used as facing
