The teacher's role in increasing

learners' motivation

National philosophy of Education

Education in Malaysia is an on going effort towards

further developing the potential of individuals in a
holistic and integrated manner so as to produce
individuals
who
are
intellectually,
spiritually,
emotionally and physically balanced and harmonious,
based on a firm belief in God. Such an effort is
designed to produce Malaysian citizens who are
knowledgeable and competent, who possess high
moral standards, and who are responsible and
capable of achieving a high level of personal well-being
as well as being able to contribute to the betterment of
the family, the society and the nation at large.

Mathematics curriculum aims:

The Malaysian school mathematics curriculum aims to develop

mathematical knowledge, competency and inculcate
positive attitudes towards mathematics among pupils.
While the Mathematics curriculum prepares pupils to cope
with daily life challenges,
the Additional Mathematics curriculum provides an exposure
to the level of mathematics appropriate for science and
technology related careers.
As with other subjects in the secondary school curriculum,
Additional Mathematics aims to inculcate noble values
and love for the nation in the development of a holistic
person, who in turn will be able to contribute to the
harmony and prosperity of the nation and its people.

The Additional Mathematics curriculum

for secondary schools aims to:

develop pupils with indepth mathematical

knowledge and ability,

use mathematics
responsibly and
effectively in
communications and
problem solving,

Be able to pursue
further studies and
embark on science
and technology
related careers.

What would make you try harder or make math

more interesting to you?

Math would be more interesting if teachers found

ways to incorporate it into everyday life so
that it could become more than just a subject.
Playing review games in order to help
remember math questions!
Nothing really, just some confidence.
Lessons are hard because there is not a lot of
time for a teacher to be with us in math.
More complex math would interest me.
If there was a reward.

The roots of students motivation are in their
home environment.
Increasing their engagement and motivation
should be a priority for teachers and
administrators.

Intrinsic motivation

It is also valuable to
stimulate students
curiosity by providing
challenging but
achievable learning
activities in order all our
students can succeed.
Teachers can encourage
learners to take
ownership in learning,
help them to identify
and decide for
themselves the relevant
learning goals, and
provide continuous
support.

Can we do @ show:

show them how to become independent and

responsible learners.
This aim can be achieved on condition that the
teacher shows his own enthusiasm and eagerness.
Students have to feel appreciated, supported and
welcome by the teacher who loves his job and wants
to establish a good relationship with the learners.
A positive learning atmosphere and giving chances
to all students by involving them into classroom
performances, and projects that can be entirely
helpful in a learning process.

The effectiveness in teaching doesnt depend on teacher efforts

alone. It depends on how well teacher support and motivate
their students.

Communication

Refer to the video presented by Pn Marsuria in

Mathematics Education SUMMIT recently.
Where she talked about how teacher should
deliver their instruction regarding the important
of mathematics communication.
Teacher should realize that we shouldn't let
students feel anxiety of mathematics especially
Additional mathematics.

Make use of website & find anything that can
bring up the your students attention in math.

To sum up, the teachers role in increasing
learners motivation is unquestionably
significant and by introducing variety into
teaching methods he can not only motivate
them positively, but also make them stay
motivated for a long time.
