Concept of IS0 14000

ISO 14000 is based on the concept that

better environmental performance can be

achieved when environmental aspects are
systematically identified and managed.

Why we need ISO 14000

By using ISO 14000 standards, the

international business community made an
attempt to develop an international standard for
Environmental management,
Environmental protection,
Reduction of environmental damage.

Conti..

Organizations use ISO 14000 as a way to enhance

relationships with consumer groups, communities, and

environmentally conscious investors
by creating
environmental friendly image.
Improves relationships with stakeholders, like suppliers,

buyers, and society.

The standard requires companies to set their

environmental policy and objectives themselves

Components ISO 14000 Series

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for an

environmental management system (EMS),

by which an organization may be certified
by a third party.
It is a process for managing company

activities that have an impact on the

environment. It is not an environmental
standard.

Benefits ISO 14000

Written procedures and instructions provides better control of
an organization.
1. Reduction of the number of sub-contractors and closer

cooperation with the rest.

2. Reduction of material use and lower

energy consumption (Christensen and Rasmussen,

1998).
3. Managers and workers become aware of

environmental aspects, regulations, and effects.

Limitations

Under ISO 14001 environmental information is gathered

for the purposes of helping to track and to manage the

corporate EMS, and is viewed as company-confidential.
Companies have no obligation to provide information about

the system to external audiences.

Difference between ISO 14000 &

9000
ISO 9001 has QMS ISO 14001 deals with EMS.
The first difference is in the policy and objectives of the
systems.
ISO 14001 is concerned with the outcome of an

organizations activities and the commitment to comply with

the legislation and other requirements from the authorities.
ISO 9001 on the contrary has more of an administrative

role and should ensure that products conform to specific

requirements defined by customers.
