A picture is worth a thousand words

WHAT ARE INFOGRAPHICS?

Visual Representation of Information

A way to communicate Information more

effectively

Makes information (Numbers, Data Statistics,

etc..) easier for audience to read/visualize

BORING!!!

INTERESTING

WHY INFOGRAPHICS?

We may have only a short attention span

Information overload
Easy to understand
Visual retention is better than reading
retention
Images are more appealing

INFOGRAPHICS : WHAT AND HOW?

What do they convey?

Timeline
Informational
Survey results, etc.

How?
Graphs/Charts
Tables
Diagrams/Maps
Blend Text and Images
Videos, etc.

HOW TO USE INFOGRAPHICS?

To
To
To
To
To

advocate an issue
show the status of an indicator
compare indicators
demonstrate correlations
illustrate trends, etc.

TO ADVOCATE AN ISSUE

TO SHOW THE STATUS OF AN INDICATOR

TO COMPARE INDICATORS

FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION

Shows how many observations fall in various categories (bins)

Can be represented in a Frequency Table

To obtain a Frequency Table for any given data, we must first

choose appropriate bins
Each bin defines a slot where some values may fall in
There is no set rule for choosing no of bins (good practice is
8 to 15)
Need enough categories to get a meaningful distribution,
Too many categories will result in few observations per
category

HISTOGRAM

A histogram is the graphical analog of a frequency

table
Histograms show the frequency with which various
category/bin values appears in the data set (e.g.,
how many students received marks between 2 and
3)
The X-axis of a histogram shows the possible
categories and the Y-axis show the frequency

CREATING A HISTOGRAM IN EXCEL

Identify the bins, and define bin range

Create Frequency Table and Histogram using Data
Analysis tools

CREATING CHARTS

A chart or graph, is a visual representation of a set

of data points.
How to build a chart

Select Data source : The range containing data

Decide Chart type : Insert tab -> chart type -> chart subtype
Specify Chart Location : Chart Tools -> Move Chart -> place
in a chart sheet or embedded into a worksheet(default)
Right click on Chart to Change Data Source and Chart type
Chart Tools Layout Tab for various options

ADDING A DATA SERIES TO AN EXISTING

CHART

Select the chart to which you want to add

a data series
Right Click -> Select Data->Add Button
Select the range with the series name and
series values you want for the new data
series
Combination Chart:

Change the chart type of any of the series.
