Positive Filipino Values


1.BAYANIHAN SYSTEM or spirit of kinship
and camaraderie
- A Filipino community spirit and
cooperation
wherein
a
group
of
individuals extends a helping hand
without expecting any remuneration. It is
characterized by communal work towards
one goal.

2. DAMAYAN SYSTEM
- It is the sympathy for people who lost their
love ones. In case of death of a certain
member of the community, the whole
community sympathizes with the bereaved
family. Neighbors, friends and relatives of
the deceased usually give certain amount of
money as their way of showing sympathy.

3. FAMILINISM or close family relations


A Filipino trait of giving highest importance
to family above other thing.
A trait
wherein the family members should be
taken care and supported regardless of
whether he/she did something wrong, a
family member must be given attention
and should not be abandoned.

The family is seen as a defense against a


hostile world and a unit where one can
turn to in case he/she has a serious
problem

4. FUN-LOVING TRAIT
- A trait found in most Filipinos, a trait that
makes them unique that even in time of
calamities and other challenges in life, they
always have something to be happy about, a
reason to celebrate.

5. HOSPITALITY: A WELCOME ATTITUDE


Bukas-Loob na Pagtanggap
- Filipinos open their hearts to complete
strangers and offer them the best in their
homes.
- process of welcoming ones sense of being:
I am a person who knocks and wishes to be
treated as a person (tao poako); The host
or hostess who welcomes is also a person
(tao rin ako tuloy!).

6. COMPASSIONATE or MAHABAGIN
- A Filipino trait of being sympathetic to
others even if the person is a stranger. An
example of this is giving alms to beggar.
This is observed when we hear Filipinos
saying kawawa naman or nakakaawa
naman.

7. REGIONALISM
A Filipino trait of giving more priority or
preference in giving favors to his province
mate before others.

8. FRIENDLY
- A trait found in most Filipinos. They are
sincere, loyal, kind and sociable person

9. FLEXIBLE or magaling makibagay


The ability of Filipinos to ride on or adjust
to the norms of other group just to attain
smooth and harmonious relationship.
10. RELIGIOUS
- Most Filipinos possess strong conformance
of their religious belief in action and in
words

11. RESPECT to elders


Being courteous both in words and in
actions to the people of older people
12. REMEDYO ATTITUDE
Being creative and resourceful
The ability to do things that are next to
impossible. Example in fixing appliances
that look impossible to repair.

13. MATIYAGA
Filipinos are known for their tenacity and
strong determination in every undertaking.
14. UTANG NA LOOB
A feeling of obligation to repay someone
who extended assistance to another which
may take place in undetermined time and
in whatever way.

RESPONSIBILITY
- portrays our true identity based on
our concern and response to others.

Pagtanaw is the unending gratitude but


this
is
not
enough
because
the
responsibility to others does not end since
pagpapakatao has no limits, same with
pakikipagkapwa-tao.

16. TUNGKULIN NG PANGANAY SA PAMILYA


This refer to the responsibility of the eldest child to
act and think like parents. Thus the eldest son may
postpone marriage or remain single just to fill up
his/her departed parents for his/her bother and
sister.
17. SIR
Refers to smooth relationship such as polite
language, soft voice, gentle manner, euphemisms
and good expression, all of which are intended to
avoid directness

18. PALABRA DE HONOR


It means keeping his promise or word(Pagtupad sa
sinabi).
19. COMPADRE SYSTEM
Refers to practice choosing well-known person to
act as godparents.
20. LAKAD SYSTEM
Meams fixing things for someone.It refers to the use
of influential third party to getting things done.

21. STATUS CONCIOUSNESS


Refers to the filipino predisposition to their honor
and status more than anything else. To many
Karangalan is far more than material wealth.
22. HIGH REGARD FOR WOMEN
Women are highly regarded and respected relied
upon when it comes to family as well as politics
and society.

Negative Filipino Values


1.BAHALA NA ATTITUDE
A Filipino trait characterized by retreating
or withdrawal from certain undertaking
and leaving everything to God to interfere
and determine the outcome of his deeds.
It happens when one simply resigns to
the consequences of lifes difficulties.
It is believing that life depends on:

Swerte or buenas (good luck)

Tadhana (decried by fate)

2. COLONIAL COMPLEX or blue-seal


mentality
A Filipino value of showing high
admiration and preference to foreign
produced goods over local ones.
3. CRAB MENTALITY
A Filipino attitude characterized by an
attempt to pull down someone who has
achieved success beyond the others. This
is done out of jealousy and insecurity.

4. EUPHEMISM
A Filipino way of substituting a word or
phrase that is thought to be offensive or
harsh with a mild and acceptable one in
order to not offend or hurt another person
Ang pagpapalit ng salitang mas
magandang pakinggan kaysa sa salitang
masyadong matalim, bulgar, o bastos na
tuwirang nakapananakit ng damdamin o
hindi maganda sa pandinig. Halimbawa
nito ang paggamit ng "sumakabilangbuhay" sa halip na ang pabalbal na
natigok, natepok, o natodas

5. FILIPINO TIME
In reality, it means always late, a Filipino
attitude of impreciseness towards time.
6. GAYA-GAYA ATTITUDE
A Filipino attitude of imitating or copying
other culture specifically in mode of
dressing, language, fashion or even
haircut

7. JACKPOT MENTALITY
A get rich quick mentality of some
Filipinos who would rather engage in fast
ways of acquiring money than through
hardwork and sacrifice by getting in lottery,
joining raffle draws and other.
8. KAPALARAN VALUES
- A Filipino trait of accepting fate by believing
that everything is written in his palm. Such
trait contributes to lack of initiative and
perseverance among Filipinos.

9. MAANA HABIT
Delaying or setting aside a certain task
assigned on the next day although it can
be done today
10. NINGAS-COGON
- being enthusiastic only during the start of
new undertaking but ends dismally in
accomplishing nothing. A common practiced
observed in some politicians who are visible
only during the start of certain endeavour.

11. OVERSENSITIVE
Filipinos have the tendency to be irritated
easily of hurt upon hearing some criticisms
or comments.
12. LACK OF SPORTSMANSHIP
Not accepting defeat in competitions but
rather putting the blame either to their
opponents or to the sport officials

13. PAKIKISAMA
Submitting oneself to the will of the group
for the sake of camaraderie and unity.
Failure to comply with the group demand,
the person will be called walang
pakikisama or selfish. The adherence to
group demands have taught our young to
engage in bad habits like smoking,
alcoholism and even drug addiction.
It is yielding to the will of the majority or
to the leader which could result to both to
positive and negative behavior. It refers to
ones effort to get along with everybody.

14. TSAMBA LANG ATTITUDE


-Simplicity
by
declaring
that
his/her
accomplishments are results of luck and not
from perseverance and ability.
15. SEGURISTA ATTITUDE
Refers to the predisposition to ask or
demand another thing that would
demonstrate assured succes

15. HELE-HELE(aayaw-ayaw pero gusto)


This refer to the filipino behavior that a person
initially refuses an offer even if he or she wants it.
16. LACK OF SPORTMANSHIP
He or she feels disgrace or shamed when he/she
loses or fails. There is a tendency to sulk and
have many excuses when defeated,which
consider as a dishonor.

17. LAGAY SYSTEM


Refers to practice of giving money or lagay or
padulas to get what one wants to the earliest and
fastest possible time.
18. KABIT SYSTEM
It refers to the practice of keeping two or more
partners or kabit or mistress.

17. PARTICULARISM
This refer to the filipino attitude wherein he
only be loyal to a certain group for his
concern rather than nation. It give raise of
regionalism, nepotism,tayo-tayo system and
the we-feelings.

engagement or crisis but because of their

It is manifested by their daop-palad habit.
Their relationship with God is the source
of
their
malinis
at
tapat
na
panunungkulan.

Origin of Filipino values


The Filipino has thereby a
foothold in many cultural
spheres: the Malay, the AngloSaxon, the Hispanic, the
Hindu-Islamic and even the
Chinese.

The Malays
The basic component of Filipino culture is
the Malay temperament which could best be
described by niceness and pleasantness to
others rather than by virtue of law abiding
features. In its fluidness of culture , the Malay
family clan or unit is the worlds best security
system.
Malay also manifested by his readiness
to adjust to a new situation and his desire to be
above all nice.

The Chinese
filial piety between parents and
children , the flexibility to go along with
other people and the sageliness within and
the kingliness without of the Filipino is
believed to be due to Chinese influence.
The Indian influence
Indian influence is found in the
languages , mode of dressing , architectural
art , folk , beliefs , brass , and copperware.

The Hindu influence


Is the most pervasive in the Filipino
belief system . For instance is the prediction
of Filipino newspaper readers for horoscope
and fortune- telling sections.

The Spanish heritage


It is reflective of more developed
societies at their point of contact ,
broadened the outlook of the Filipino . Spain
introduced a community oriented rather
than a family- oriented religion in the form
of Christianity . It contributed to an elite
class .
A social and political organization,
according to western institutions, was
brought into the Philippines.

The Americans
the united states further broadened
this heritage by introducing a democracy
that called for individual liberty and equality
as well as a national political community to
which everybody was supposed to
participate through national suffrage.
English language, mass education,
public health and road system are american
contribution to the Filipino.

-refers to the filipino need emotional stability and familial
security
2.Reciprocality
-refers to the gratitude value of filipino.

3.Social acceptance
-refers filipino needs to be accepted as a person,as subject
and not an object
4.Social mobility
-refers to the filipino's desire to progress and development.
Filipino is willing to go abroad for the sake of progressive
way of living
5.Self-esteem
-refers to filipino need respect or esteemed particularly.
