Purpose of project

Understanding behavior modification with the help of pre

intervention and post intervention technique

Analyzing the person's behavior on the food they waste

Analyzing the behavior that needs to be changed & try to modify

them by applying the intervention

Comparing the past and present nature of the people towards

wastage of food.

Behavior
Modification
A theory that explains learning in terms of the antecedents and
consequences of behavior. It represents the application of reinforcement
concepts to an individual in work settings.
It follows a five-step procedure which includes:

Identification of critical behavior

Development of baseline data

Identification of behavioral consequences

Development and implementation of intervention strategy

Evaluation of performance improvement

buy with

take

required

clean

Learning Theory
Learning is any relatively permanent change in behavior that occurs as a
result of experience gained by an individual

Classical conditioning
an individual responds to some stimulus that would not ordinarily produce
such a response
Operant conditioning
i.
a desired voluntary behavior leads to a reward or prevent a punishment
ii.
It is a learned behavior which is repeated by the influence of
reinforcement or lack of it brought up by the consequence of the behavior.
Social learning
it occurs by observing others and then modeling the behavior that lead to
favorite outcomes

Behavior to be
changed
i.

Buy the food in accordance with the consumption capacity

as the resources are limited

ii.

Take the items that you will have in the plate, rather than
whatever is available even if we do not eat it them

iii.

If the food is left in the plate then that food must be

wrapped up and given to beggars who are
looking for helping hands in their hardships

Intervention
Technique used

It is used to change the behavior of the people

that is not appropriate towards a particular
situation

The intervention technique used is:

Putting up a POSTER in the college canteen on

payment desk, canteen platform, on each table,
and near dustbins and to strengthen the behavior
by positive reinforcement as APPRECIATION

Intervention
Technique used

It would change the behavior with help of Operant Conditioning

and Social learning- an extension of operant conditioning.

It is do to achieve an appreciation which has been used as a

positive reinforcement technique here and as continuous
reinforcement

Pre-Intervention
Data

We have observed people in the hostel, buying in excess of what they

can eat and wasting a large quantity of food every day

Out of 40 people we have observed, on an average 30 people were

disposing the food

Mathematically considering total 1500 people, the total people leaving

the food per day as 1125

This amounts to around Rs.4500 per day. If this is stretched for a year it
amounts to around Rs.13Lacs

Post-Intervention
Data

The reduction in wastage was basically due to:

i.
People started buying less as because they realized how much they
can consume
ii.
Instead of throwing the food as a junk they wrapped the food and
distributed to the beggars near canteen
iii. The poster made them realize the real situation of poor people who
do not have access to food & thus making them realize not to waste
it

We have used positive reinforcement technique by capturing the

photos and appreciating his gesture which would have triggered a
positive stimulus of being appreciated

Picture describing people

who left food in the canteen
and which would be dumped
directly to dustbin

People showed the concern &

finished the food without
wasting it

Changes in pre & post

Intervention

Initially they buy without thinking of quantity what they could eat but
now they buy according to their intake capacity

They used to take full amount of food what vendors give them
irrespective of the fact whether they could consume it or not but now
they ask for less amount of food

They throw the food as junk without thinking of the needy but now they
have concern for them and wrap it

There were approximately 75% of the people in the canteen that threw
the left food as a waste which reduced to 47%

We appreciate your initiative for

not wasting the food and
donating it to a needy child

Thanks for showing the concern for

Results

People followed the process of wrapping up the food & kept in

mind the resources left around us

There is a lot of awareness amongst the people using canteen

regularly which could save a lot of food & money which can be
used to remove starvation around the area to some extent

The change in human behavior along with the reason for change
was analyzed & understood which in turn explained the learning
theories and OB Mod

Recommendation for
improvement

Until the person is willing to change from inside and understand the
miserable conditions of needy people there could not be any
technique which could transfigure their behavior.

There are still many people who throw the food as junk after seeing
the poster, for them we have to understand their thoughts toward
the process and transform them

We have to evolve the feeling of social responsibility in them to

change their behavior and help the society who needs them.

You
