Introduction to Embedded
System
Definition

An embedded system is one that has

computer hardware with software
embedded in it as one of its important
components
OR
An embedded system is a specialpurpose computer system designed to
perform certain dedicated functions

Introduction to Embedded
System

Significance

Embedded systems are found everywhere

from kitchenware to spacecraft

Consumer Electronics (Microwave Oven, Coffee Maker,

)
Automobiles Electronics(ABS, ECU,)
Medical Systems(ECG Recorder, Patient Monitoring
System,)
Telecommunications (Fax, Smart Phone,)
Industrial Equipments (CNC , DC Motor Controller,)
Scientific Instrumentation(Spectrum Analyzer, Logic
Analyzer,.. )
Spacecraft Electronics (AOCS, OBDH, )

What makes Embedded

Systems Different

Real-time Operation
Size
Power
Cost
Reliability

Embedded Systems for

Space

Embedded
systems
applications are built
the harsh environment
operate autonomously
resources

for
space
to withstand
of space and
using scarce

To perform fast processing

Consumes less power
Smaller in Size
Highly Reliable

Design Consideration

Avoid Single Point Failure

Improve Fault Tolerance(e.g: TMR)
Selection of Components(e.g: Space
heritage, low Outgassing , Radiation
hardened, )

Onboard Computer and Data

Handling

The On-Board Data Handling subsystem

is essentially the "brain" of the satellite.
This system:
manages and controls all spacecraft all
forms of data on the spacecraft
carries out commands sent from Earth
prepares data for transmission to Earth
manages collection of solar power and
charging of the batteries

Functionality of OBDH
collects and processes information about
all subsystems and payloads
keeps and distributes the spacecraft time
calculates the spacecraft's position in orbit
carries out commanded maneuvers; and,
autonomously monitors and responds to a
wide range of onboard problems that
might occur.

Conclusion

11

Currently, Space Industry is working on

miniaturization of on-board computer
using
reconfigurable
programmable
logic, system-on-a-chip design and
'ruggedizing' modern commercial-offthe-shelf (COTS) technologies
This
will
reduce
the
cost
of
redeveloping,
constructing,
and
launching
