Biodiversity

Look how many more different species of Insects there are

compared to everything else living!!!!

Economic vs Ecological Value

Economic value is how biodiversity and organisms affects
human.

Ecological value is how biodiversity and organisms effect

other organisms.

How Ecosystems Make Money

Many companies run tours to rainforest, savannas, mountains,
and other places. People will sell recourses (hopefully
renewable) to make money also.

Disruption of Biodiversity
Other organisms will be harmed or die if the biodiversity is
disrupted. Also if economy will go down by not having resources
to use as a profit.

Keystone Species
Keystone species are the species that affect other
species.

Think about Biodiversity In Our Life?!

What Factors Effect Biodiversity?

Factors that affect biodiversity in an ecosystem are:
Climate
Area
Niche
Diversity
Genetic Diversity
Extinction

Figure 3
Park Size
The dark green area represents three
different park plans. Which plan supports the
most bio-diversity?
Area
A large area will usually contain more
species than a small area
Climate
Tropical rain forests have mostly
consistent temperatures and
lots of rainfall meaning many
plants grow year round. Food is
always available for organisms.

APPLY IT!
Not only can
this happen to
potato plant but
it can also
happen to other
plants in which
we consume in
our daily lives
and without
food we would
all die of
starvation.

What is
Niche Diversity- The role of an organism in its habitat or how it
makes its living
Genetic diversity- Greatest genetic diversity exists within unicellular
organisms
Species lacking diverse genes are less capable to adapt and
survive changes to the environment

Extinction- disappearance of a species from earth

Damaging Biodiversity
Habitat Destruction:
Clearing forests, filling wetlands,
Or making habitats smaller
Poaching:
illegal killing or removal of wildlife
Pollution:
Reaches animals through water,
food, or the air
Exotic Species:
Exotic species can outcompete
and damage native species

Protecting Biodiversity

How do humans affect biodiversity

Humans can affect biodiversity in many ways.
Some people protect biodiversity by focusing on
an individual
Species but others try to protect the whole
ecosystem.

Three Methods for Protecting Biodiversity.

1. Captive Breeding- Mating of animals in zoos or on
wildlife preserves
1. Laws and Treaties- Prohibits trade of products made
from threatened or endangered species
1. Habitat Preservation- Most effective way to preserve
biodiversity is to protect whole ecosystem

Captive Breeding
Captive breeding is the mating of animals in zoos or on
wildlife preserves.
There are many wildlife preserve services.
WE ARE LOSING OVER A DOZEN PLANT AND ANIMAL
SPECIES EVERYDAY.
At this rate is far faster than when the dinosaurs died out 65
million years ago.

Laws and Treaties

The United States has many laws that prohibit people hunting
and killing certain species that are near extinct.
Such as the Endangered Species Act which prohibits trade of
products made from threatened or endangered species.
The Convection on International Trade in Endangered
Species have saved over 800 different threatened or
endangered species.

Habitat Preservation
If we do this we can save endangered species.
Many countries have set aside wildlife habitats as parks and
refuges.

Same Land, Different Use

The same land resources
can be used in different
ways to meet different
needs. What are the
costs and benefits of
these two different land
uses?
