14 mining areas of Romania

Hard coal:

Coal Mining

Most coal deposits in Romania are concentrated in the coal area - Valea Jiului;

Coal production was almost reduced by half in the last 20 years, mostly due to the
decreased mining activity and reduced coal consumption;

Romania ranks 7th among coal producers in the European Union countries.

Annual production: ~ 1.5 mln tons;

Hard coal resources are estimated at 2206 million tons.

Lignite:

Lignite is the raw material used to produce electricity and heat in most power plants in
Romania;

There is a reserve of lignite in use by over 400 million tonnes, concentrated in a small
area, providing about 15 years;

The main producer of lignite in Romania is Tg-Jiu Branch Mining Division

(98.66%, 2013);

Annual production: ~ 21 mln tons.

The difference between production and consumption of lignite is 10 mln tons.

Oil and Gas

The first country in the world with a petroleum production officially

registered in the international statistics;

The worlds first refinery and oil well by Mehedineanu brothers.

Bucharest, the worlds first city public illuminated with kerosene (1000 street lamps);

Romania was the first country in the world that export gasoline since 1900.

Romania currently has 10 oil refineries.

Currently, in Romania, a total of 447 deposits operated by oil and natural gas.

Romania have a good position to actively participate in the development projects of

pan-European gas pipelines;

Construction materials:

Romanian cement market are dominated by three big companies: LAFARGE,

HEIDELBERG CEMENT and HOLCIM.

The concrete market and the aggregates market are very fragmented: 200 - 300
companies are active on the concrete market and around 500 - 700 on the
aggregates market.

AAC and clay/ceramic bricks account together almost 80% of the wall building
materials market.

There are around 25 brick plants and 12 AAC plants currently active in Romania.

Annual production of:

Cement: ~ 10.5 mln tons;
Concrete: ~ 8 mln m.
Aggregates: ~ 50 mln tons;
AAC: ~ 2 mln tons.

Salt mining
Salt mining in Romania is provided by The National Salt Society;
Open reserves of over 100 million tons,
can provide actual demand over a period of over 40 years;
Salt mines in operation:Slnic Prahova, Ocna Mures, Praid, Ocna Dej,
Rmnicu Vlcea, Trgu Ocna, Cacica.
Many mines are just a sight of city: Salina Turda(1992) has been visited by
about 2 million Romanian and foreign tourists.
Annual production : ~2.2 mln tons.

Rosia-Poieni Mine
Carpathian Gold project
Estimated deposits:
120 tons of gold
100,000 tonnes of copper.
Size of career:
diameter of 500-600m
depth 300-400 meters.
Explorations gold worth
over 3.1 billion dollars over 17 years.
Work period: 1978 - nowadays
Exploited resources: copper
Company: CUPRUmin
Annual production : ~5000 tons
(65% of the total amount of copper in Romania)
