INTRODUCTION

Research is going on for the last 30 years

on different kinds of WEC.
80% of power needed is generated from
fossil fuel.
Two types of WEC utilizing vertical force of
wave are:
1. Point absorber driven linear generator
2. Floating wave energy extractor

POINT ABSORBER DRIVEN LINEAR GENERATOR

The rising and falling of the
waves offshore causes the
buoy to move freely up and
down
|
The resultant mechanical
stroking drives the electrical
generator
|
The generated AC power is
converted into high voltage
DC and transmitted ashore via
an underwater power cable

FLOATING WAVE ENERGY EXTRACTOR

ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY
The system consists of a rectangular
shaped huge mass floating body supported
by a large number of floating air columns.
The air columns extensions are connected
to pistons.
The pistons are placed its own cylinders.
The pistons reciprocate in the cylinders
when the floating air columns moves with
the up-down movements of the waves

FLOATING WAVE ENERGY EXTRACTOR

COMPONENTS
A float made of huge mass.
Piping system for delivering the hydraulic
fluid.
Floating air columns.
An air tight fluid tank.
The Anchors.
Power transmission equipments

WORKING

UNIQUE FEATURES
Can be installed anywhere, only constraint is
the availability of waves, depth of sea
irrelevant.
No directional waves is required by the
system.
Risk of corrosion is reduces to an extent.
Tidal activities like tsunami doesnt affect the
operation of the system.

Worldwide Wave Power Levels (KW/m of Wave Front)

ADVANTAGES
Relatively easy to build and install.
Requires low cost maintenance for a
life time of 30 years.
Power can be fed immediately into the power grid
or stored.
Scalable to high capacity power stations(100MW+)
Production cost is highly competitive against
conventional sources of power.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADVANTAGES

Waste free power generation.

Pollution free
Shoreline erosion is avoided
Space requirement is very less

DRAWBACKS

High installation costs

Corrosive action of sea water in parts
exposed to saline water in the ocean

CONCLUSION

Wave energy forms the most deeply powered

natural resource which can be directly used
for energy generation.

Wave energy will become one of the most

versatile sources of renewable energy in
future.
