different ways to describe:
- Western Art Music = classical music
- Music composed between the years
1750 1820 and displays a particular
style = Classical music

The symphony
A symphony is an extended composition
which is usually written for orchestra
It is usually made up of between 3 and 4
sections which are known as movements

In the Classical symphony the 1st movement


is usually in a type of ternary structure
know as sonata form.

The 2nd movement is at a slower

tempo

and will generally be in a related key to the


1st movement.

The 3rd movement is often based on a


dance borrowed from the

Baroque

period

known as a minuet and trio.

The 4th movement is played at a fast tempo

music which usually contrasts itself
