Introduction
The objectives of a research project summarize
what is to e achieved by the study.
To clearly set out what is the researcher wants to
find out.
Research objectives answer the question:
Why is this project being conducted?
The scope of research is determined by what one
wants to achieved (objectives).
It is essential to define the research objectives,
because it will avoid wasting time and effort in
later stages.
Objectives should be closely related to the
statement of the problem.

The objectives of research

There are 5 general objectives that research in
general may attempt to achieve:
i) description
ii) explanation
iii) forecasting
iv)control
v)modelling
The most frequent objectives are description and
explanation.

Why should research

objectives be developed?
Once the need for research information has been
clearly defined, the researcher must specify the
objectives of the proposed research and develop a
specific list of information needs.
The formulation of objectives will help you to:
i) focus the study (narrowing it down to
essentials)
ii) avoid the collection of data which are not
strictly necessary for understanding and solving
the problem you
have identified.
iii)organize the study in clearly defined parts or
phases.
Properly formulated, specific objectives will
facilitate the development of research methodology

Types of Research
Objectives
General Objectives
i) They are broad statements of desired outcomes
or general intentions of the research.
ii) They emphasize what is to be accomplished,
not how it is to be accomplished.
iii) They address the long term project outcomes.
iv) General objective do not need to be numbered.
Once general objective have been established, the
next task is to formulate the specific objectives.
Generally, a project should have no more than 2 or
3 general objectives.

Specific Objectives
i) They are steps you are going to take to answer your
research questions or a specific list of tasks needed to
accomplish the goals.
ii) They emphasize how aims are to be accomplished
iii) They must be highly focused and feasible
iv) They address the more immediate project outcomes.
v) They make accurate use of concepts and be sensible and
precisely described.
vi) They are usually numbered so that each objective reads
as an individual statement to convey your intentions.
For each specific objective you must have a method to
attempt to achieved it. The development of a realistic time
schedule may help to prioritize your objectives and help to
minimize wasted time and effort.

How to state research

objectives?
Research objectives would be better if it follows
the rules of a good research objectives as follows:
i) Specific what precisely do you hope to achieve
from undertaking the research?
ii) Measurable what measures will you use to
determine whether you have achieved your
objectives?
iii) Achievable - are the targets you have set for
yourself achievable given all the possible
constraints?
iv) Realistic given all the other demands upon
your time, will you have the time and energy to
complete the research on time?
v) Timely will you have time to accomplish all

Conclusion
Research objectives become the pillar of any
academic research.
Without it, the direction of the research is blurred
and a lot of problem will be faced.
Research objectives will guide the direction of the
research process, will determine the research
questions and objectives and guide the choice of
the appropriate research methodology.
It will also guide the reporting of the research
results.
