Question 27:
Work spans a large period in most individuals lives
and takes up a large portion of their time. As such, it is
imperative that an individual not only enjoy what they
do, but to also take pride in it. In To be of Use, a
narrator admires those who work and take pride in their
work. Repetition is used to elucidate this admiration.
Repetition is the repeated use of a word or phrase in
order to provide emphasis. The narrator admires those
who strain in the mud and muck to move things
forward, who do what has to be done, again and again.
The word who is repeated in order to emphasize
individuals who not only work hard to continue to do so
until the task is completed. These individuals have a
work ethic that requires them to work hard and to the
best of their ability. People who work hard until a task is
completed and those who exhibit pride in their work by
doing their absolute best are those that the narrator
holds in high regard. Watching an individuals work ethic
provides insight into their character. In both texts, the
individuals described not only work hard, but also take
responsibility for and pride in their work.
