How to calculate how much battery

capacity (SLA Battery) you need.

Example: Equipment draw 1.2A and we need to run for 12

hours

Step 1
Determine Capacity needed : Capacity= 1.2 amp x 12 hrs

= 28.8 AH

How to estimate how much battery

capacity (SLA Battery) you need.

Step 2:- Cycle life

Considerations: To extend the cycle of lead acid battery, we
shouldnt run the battery past 80% of its capacity.

Thus,
Capacity = C/0.8
= 28.8 / 0.8
= 36 AH

capacity (SLA Battery) you need.

Step 3:- Rate of Discharge

considerations:

Some battery chemistries give much lesser fewer ampere

hours if we discharge them at a higher rate.
Eg:If a SLA battery rated at 100AH, 20 hrs discharge rate
1) If it is discharged at 5A for 20 hours, the battery will able
to deliver the rated capacity of the battery, i.e 100AH
2) However, if it is discharged at 100 A , the battery will be
depleted within half an hour instead of the calculated 1
hour . This is called the Peukert Effect.

Peukert's law,
presented by the German scientist Wilhelm Peukert
in 1897, expresses the capacity of a battery in terms
of the rate at which it is discharged. As the rate
increases, the battery's available capacity decreases
Peukert's law is as follows:
Cp = I K t
Cp = is the capacity according to Peukert, at a
one-ampere. discharge rate, expressed in AH
I = the discharge current, expressed in
Amperes,a.
k = the Peukert constant,
t = the time of discharge, expressed in hours, h.

Examples: Ex 1
At 5A 100 AH ( 20 Hrs rate)
T=100/(5^1.3)
= 12.3 hrs

Ex. 2
At 15.8A 79AH ( 5 Hrs rate)
T= 79/(15.8^1.3)
= 2.18 hrs

REVISED PEUKERTs LAW

The capacity at a one-ampere discharge rate is not usually given for practical cells. As such,
it can be useful to reformulate the law to a known capacity and discharge rate:

where:

is the rated discharge time (in hours),

is the rated capacity at that discharge rate (in ampere-hours),
is the actual discharge current (in amperes),
is the Peukert constant (dimensionless),
is the actual time to discharge the battery (in hours).

Examples: Ex 1
At 5A 100 AH ( 20 Hrs rate)
T=20(100/5 x 20)^1.3
= 20 hrs

Ex. 2
At 15.8A 79AH ( 5 Hrs rate)
T= 5(79/15.8 x 5)^1.3
= 5 hrs

Peukerts Law Limitations

Peukerts law is a valuable tool for estimation. However, it
has limitations. Among them are
1) The affect that temperature has on batteries is not
included in the equation.
2) Battery age is not considered. The Peukert exponent
increases with battery age.
3) If youre calculating for a low discharge rate, the equation
does not account for the fact that each battery has a self
discharge rate.

What is Peukert Exponent for Your

Particular Battery
Its different from battery to battery. Worse, many
manufacturers do not readily publish a Peukerts
exponent. That said, there are some general ranges for
the different kinds of lead acid batteries that can be used
for estimation purposes.
AGM batteries range between 1.05 and 1.15
Gel batteries range between 1.1 and 1.25
Flooded batteries range between 1.2 and 1.6

Amp Hours vs Kilowatt Hours

Power in Watts = Current in Amps x Voltage
Consider the following
A battery rated for 100 amp hours will provide 5 amps
for 20 hours.
If we have a 12 volt battery, we multiply 100 by 12 and
determine that the battery will provide 1200 watt hours.
