Content-based Instruction
What is CBI?
It is based on Immersion Education that
originated in Canada
Is a method of teaching that revolves
around on teaching specific content or
subject matter and not around linguistics
or other type of syllabus.
We learn the target language by applying
it to a certain topic instead of prioritizing
on learning the language
Assumptions
More on CBI
Curtain and Pesola (1994) limit the
definition
of
CBI
to
those
"...curriculum concepts being taught
through the foreign language ...
appropriate to the grade level of
the students..."
Genesee (1994) suggests that
content '...need not be academic; it
LANGUAGE is purposeful
It is used for specific purpose
such as vocational, social or
recreational. In order to make
adjustments and simplifications for
the students to learn.
Learners Roles
Become independent
Supports in cooperative
tasks
Tolerates uncertainty
Willing to explore alternative
learning strategies
Teachers Roles
Principles
In a nutshell.
CBI makes an assumption that
learners learn best when they are
given language in a meaningful,
contextualized form with the
primary focus on acquiring
information
Admit it, they were your first teachers in learning the English language
