Rectilinear Translation
Is

a motion in a plane or one

dimension.

TYPES

OF RECTILINEAR
TRANSLATION
1. Horizontal
Vertical
Curvilinear

Horizontal Translation
Is

a straight motion along a

horizontal plane.
If acceleration is zero (a=0) the velocity of
body remains constant throughtout the
motion.
Vo = V
S= vt
Where: Vo= initial velocity (t=0)
V= final velocity
S= distanced travelled after
Elapsed time.

If acceleration is constant the initial velocity is not

equal to the final velocity.

Where:
Vo = initial velocity
V= final velocity
S= distance travelled @ time t
a = acceleration

Vertical Translation
Is

a straight motion along a vertical plane.

Where: V0= initial velocity

V= final velocity
S= displacement/ distance travelled
a= acceleration
Use:
(+) if going down
(-) if going up

If acceleration of body is not given

utilized
g= 9. 801 m/s2
g = 32. 2 ft/ s2

Free Falling Body

A

body is said to be free falling if the

initial
Use:

g= 9. 801 m/s2
g = 32. 2 ft/ s2

Example
A

ball is thrown vertically from the

ground and a student gazing out the
window sees it moving upward him
at 5 m/sec. The window is 10 m
above the ground. How far from high
does the ball go above the ground?

Solution
Use the formula:
0 = 25 2 ( 9.81 ) h
h =1.3 m
H= 10 + h
= 10 + 1.3
H= 11.3 m

Curvilinear Translation
Is

a motion along a curve path either

on horizontal or vertical plane. This
type of motion include trajectory or
projectile. Which is a curve on the
vertical plane and rotation at
horizontal plane.

Projectile
A

body which after a given an initial

velocity and initial angle is allowed
to travel under the action of gravity
only.

Example
The

motion of a particle is given by

the equation
where
sis in meter andtin seconds.
Compute the values of
vandawhent =2 sec.
