Popeye The Sailor Man...

POPEYE....
Popeye is what he is

a good-guy
underdog with
bulging forearms, a
mean uppercut and a
penchant for canned
spinach. The only
thing he loves more
than spinach and the
sea is his flighty,
flirty girlfriend, Olive
Oyl.

Birth of popeye
Popeye made his first public appearance on
Jan. 17, 1929, in Elzie Segars then nineyear-old comic strip, THIMBLE THEATRE,
which originally revolved around Olive Oyls
family.

First Cartoon Series

I YAM WHAT I YAM was the first cartoon in the

series of POPEYE cartoons produced by the

Fleischer Studios between 1933 and 1942.

POPULARITY
Popeye was the one

of the most popular

cartoon stars from
the 1930s through
the 1960s. Overall,
753 POPEYE cartoon
segments exist to
date.

POPEYE ON TELEVISION
In 1978, an hour-long

animated series
produced by HannaBarbera Productions,
THE ALL-NEW POPEYE
HOUR, aired on the CBS
Saturday morning
lineup. In 1981, it was
cut to a half hour and retitled THE POPEYE AND
OLIVE SHOW, where it
ran on CBS until 1983.

POPEYE WALKS ON SILVER SCREEN

In 1980, Paramount

Pictures released a
live-action musical
motion picture in
which Popeye was
portrayed by Robin
Williams and Olive
Oyl played by Shelley
Duvall.

POPEYE IN GAMES
Namco Networks, a

leading publisher and

developer of mobile
games and
entertainment for
mass-market casual
gamers, released a
Game Boy Advance
video game called
Popeye Rush for
Spinach in 2005.

A TRIBUTE BY GOOGLE
On Dec. 8, 2009, Popeye was featured in the

Google logo to honor the anniversary of the

birth of his creator, Elzie Crisler Segar. The
Google Doodle appeared with the mouseover
text, E.C. Segars Birthday.

POPEYE WALKS THE RAMP

In 2011, an exclusive

line of Popeyebranded apparel was

unveiled and sold in
Bloomingdales
stores throughout
the United States.

Intresting Facts
Popeye was a one-eyed, 34-year-old (born in a typhoon in

Santa Monica, California), semi-deformed-looking sailor with

a severe speech impediment
The Popeye cartoon has given a few terms and words to the
English language:
J. Wellington Wimpy, an apathetic, overweight, hamburgerloving friend of Popeyes is reputed to be the source of the
term wimp (meaning timid or cowardly)
Goon family, a group of strange, odd-looking creatures

(featuring Alice the Goon) gave the word goon its

meaning of weird or strange-looking.

In Spain, the name of Popeyes girlfriend

Olive Oyl is seen as an insult to the olive tree

and she has been renamed Rosario.
. In 2004, the Empire State Building was lit up
in spinach green to honour Popeyes 75th
birthday.
Bluto's name was changed to Brutus when
King Features' television cartoons were
created - they believed (incorrectly) that
Paramount owned the rights to the name
Bluto.

POPEYE BRAND SPINACH...

The Popeye cartoons

were so popular during

the Depression, sales of
spinach in America
increased by 33%, and it
briefly slotted in as the
third most popular kids
food after ice cream and
turkey. Popeye spinach
is still the second
largest-selling brand of
spinach in America
