What’s WiTricity ?

 Defn. of WiTricity-wireless electricity

 Need of WiTricity-increasing demand of appl.

 Concerns of recent Tech.-resistance

 Goal of Technology-removal of grid

 Movers and Inventors of Tech.

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 3

History of WET
 Nikola Tesla(1899), Electromagnetic Induction
e.g. power transformers, motors etc.

 Later, EM radiation in the form of radio waves

e.g. antenna pole and lamp

 direct EM radiation like LASER’S but in vain.

 In 2007,MIT team introduced WREL tech.

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 4

Types of Energy Transfer

3 major types of Wireless Energy Transfer

- Short range: Inductive Coupling
– Medium range: Resonant Induction
– Long range: Electromagnetic Wave Power
Transfer

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 5

Inductive Coupling
  What’s Inductive Coupling?

 Range of Inductive Coupling

 Use of the Inductive Coupling

 Effect of I. Coupling

 Applications

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 6

Resonant Induction
 What Is Resonance and Resonant Induction?

 Types of Resonant Induction

-acoustic, mechanical, electromagnetic etc.

 Examples
-1.Swing 2.Shattering of Glasses

 MIT Team conc. On Electromagnetic Coupled Resonators.

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 7

Principles and working
Works on the principle of ‘Coupled Resonance’
 Two copper coils radius 25 cm each

sender coil to power source, receiver coil to the

light bulb.
 When turned on ,the sender coil emits electricity in

the form of a magnetic field, oscillating at a

specific frequency 9.9MHz
 The receiver coil picks up the transmission

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 8

Actual Mechanism

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 9

Experimental realization
 Two Self resonating coils
 source coil coupled
inductively to an
oscillating circuit, sec. coil
inductively to a resistive
load.
 interplay between
distributed inductance
gives rise to resonance

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 10

Efficiency Vs Distance Graph

 Efficiency decayed with

distance
 40% efficiency at 225cm
 Wall to load ratio 15%
 Copper oxide layer
decreased power transfer
efficiency
 It leaves room for
improvement

Dream Product

Wireless technology will expand current

electronics market

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 13

Features of the Technology
 No effect of hindrance

 100% assurance of charging

 Non radiative-Doesn’t affect on environment

 Scalable design-can be designed to handle broad range

 Minimum wastage of power

 Million times efficient than Tesla’s one

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 14

Advantages
 simplicity

 safe, fairly efficient, good range

 free from wire grid

 weak interaction with human

 omni-directional power

 range from mill watts to kilowatts

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 15

 flexible geometry-easily embedded
 more environment friendly
 more reliable

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 16

Applications Consumer electronics

 Auto wireless charging of

mobile, laptops, i-pod

 Direct wireless powering of

TV’s, digi.frames, home-
theaters etc.

 Wireless powering of
desktop PC’s ,printers,
speakers etc.

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 17

Industrial and Transport

  Wireless
 Transportation communication
across moving parts or
joints
 In drilling, mining work

Replace costly wiring

and slip rings

Auto wireless charging of

mobile robots

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 18

Other…
 Wireless charging for
ventricular devices,
pacemaker etc.

 In military, sensors,
aircraft

 Auto charging of smart

cards

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 19

Future of Technology
 Aim to rise Efficiency
 More work in moving instruments
 e.g. moving robots.
 Four to five years to go for commercial use.
 Signed nondisclosure agreements to develop
products with more than 100 companies
manufacturers of:
Cell phones, MP3 players, automotive parts,
temperature sensors, hearing aids and medical
implants
 Wild Charge: a Colorado-based company
Released a special back plate for the Motorola RAZR

SCOE, Information Technology 2010 20

Conclusion
 This technology is a big impediment to development in the retail
sector right now.
 The wireless transfer of electricity has been a sci-fi dream up to
this point ,and truly, if electricity could simply be in the air, in the
same way radio waves and wi-fi signals are, it would change the
world.
 Let's hope the researchers will be able to come up with the
commercial system soon. Till then, we wait in anticipation!
