CONTROL OIL SYSTEM

The control oil (electro hydrolysis oil) plays a very i

mportant role in the operation of the steam turbine. T
he steam that enters the steam turbine is controlled by
stop and control valves. These valves serve as the act
uators that either close or open to enable steam into th
e steam turbine. Though they both play similar functi
ons, the main difference is that the stop valves have j
ust two positions, ie either fully closed or fully opene
d while the control valves enabled the steam turbine t
o be operated based on the pressure and the operation
required at a particular point in time

CONTROL OIL SYSTEM

The control oil therefore serves as the oil to actuate th

e main stop and control valve when a signal is sent
from the digital electro hydraulic system. (DEH)

SYSTEM FLOW
The control oil pump delivers the oil at a high pres
sure of about 10mpa. It then enters the filters for
filtration and then to an accumulator which stabili
zes the pressure. It is then channeled to a distribu
tion block from which the servo valves get their oil
s for the final actuation of the SV and CV. The oil th
en flows through a return manifold after the actua
tion and is cooled before it enters the tank. The st
andby pump will start automatically if the outlet p
ressure of the control oil pump gets to 7mpa, and
the system will trip if the pressure falls to 6mpa.

THE CONTROL VALVE

The Control valve control module comprises of

an electro-hydraulic servo valve and two filters.
These filters are installed to ensure oil of high q
uality is allowed into the actuators

THE STOP VALVE

OPERATION OF CONTROL AND STOP VALVES

The control valve is actuated by a hydraulic cylinder moving agains

t spring loaded valve plugs. Two solenoid servo valves are driven b
y electrical signals from the control system to regulate the hydrauli
c oil in the actuator cylinders. Redundant sensors in the form Linea
r Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) is mounted on CVs to pro
vide the control system with valve position feedback. The feedback
signals go through the servo-amplifier. The feedback signal is com
pared to the input position signal of the CV. An error is derived fro
m the comparison. For stable control, the amplified error is propor
tioned to command the integrating amplifier which drives the serv
o valve.

When the LVDT feedback equals the input position signal, the actua
ting cylinder holds position. The CV has a limit switch to indicate th
e fully open or close position

The stop valve is actuated by a hydraulic cylinder moving against a

loaded spring. Two solenoid servo valves are driven by electrical si
gnals from the control system to regulate the hydraulic oil in the ac
tuator cylinders. There are two operating positions of the SV; fully
closed or fully opened which are indicated by a limit switch. In an e
vent of an emergency trip or normal shutdown, a negative comma
nd signal drives the SV servo valve into negative saturation. The SV
actuator cylinder allows the SV return spring to close the valve. The
stop valve is opened immediately after steam turbine is safety set.
The SV does not have LVDTs

Hydraulic oil for valves actuation flows from pump discharge into a
n inlet manifold ahead of the cylinders and oil return from the valv
es flows back into a return manifold before entering the reservoir.
Filters are located on the servo block for filtration of the working fl
uid
