WHAT IS DRY SKIN?

Lack of the appropriate amount of water in the most
superficial layer of the skin. - Transepidermal water
loss (TEWL)
The epidermis is normally composed of fat (lipid) and
protein.
The lipid portion of the epidermis helps prevent skin
dehydration. When the skin's fatty oils are removed, the
skin loses its protection and loses moisture more easily.

 Xerosis:

Ichthyosis: presence of excessive amounts of dry
surface scales

Corneocytes : Flat, hexagonal-shaped cells filled with water-retaining

keratin proteins surrounded by a protein envelope and lipids.
Desmosomes: The cells remain connected to each other by protein
bridges

Corneoctyes and skin shedding (Desquamation )
Desquamation : Dissolving the desmosomes.
In the absence of water, the cells do not desquamate
normally and the result is thickened, dry, rough, scaly
skin.
Increased production of corneocytes (skin diseases such
as psoriasis) or decreased shedding (skin diseases like
ichthyosis) results in the accumulation of cells on the
skin surface and dry, rough skin.

WHAT CAUSES DRY SKIN?

Critical moisturizing factor in skin is water with sebum playing a secondary
role as a lubricant. A moisture content of 10%-30% is necessary to keep the
skin soft and supple.
Aging and heredity: As people grow older, skin secretes less sebum
lubrication.
