GSM/EDGE
Multiradio BTS

Flexi Multiradio BTS is a base transceiver station that is

part of the Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi BTS
platform for GSM/EDGE, WCDMA, and LTE networks.
It is a multiradio or multicarrier BTS that can use all these
network technologies either in dedicated or concurrent
mode of operation
Its modular design makes site acquisition and
installation easy, and reduces the time needed for rolling
out network coverage in a new area.
It allows using existing site space efficiently, the
existing Flexi BTS modules can be installed together with
Flexi Multiradio BTS modules.
The existing Flexi BTS cabinets and casings, power
supplies, and the 3G Flexi System Module can be used
with Flexi Multiradio modules.

Conformity to standards
Conformity to 3GPP Standards:
GSM/EDGE: GERAN TS 45.005 (Rel.8), TS 51.021: MC BTS class 1 and 2 *
For MC BTS Class 1 the following relaxations apply:
Number of the carriers/branch: Up to 3 carriers
Total output power/branch: Up to 60W (1dB tolerance allowed)
No single carrier 3GPP specifications are guaranteed.

WCDMA: UTRA-FDDTS 25.104 (Rel.8), TS 25.141

LTE: eUTRA TS 36.104 (Rel.8), TS 36.141
Multi Standard Radio: 3GPP TS 37.104 Rel.9

*) MC BTS class 2 is characterized by a limit for TX 3rd order intermodulation of -60 dBm (average). Specification of TX
spurious emissions outside the TX band will also be less stringent in an offset range from 2MHz to 10MHz from band
edges.

Main functions of the modules
The System Module is the center of the system. It has all the
external interfaces of the BTS (apart from the antenna
interfaces). Main functions of the System Module are the
Transport, BTS O&M, synchronization, power distribution and
baseband processing functions. System Module interfaces
support up to four Radio Modules with local power feed. Radio
modules are connected to System Module through RP3-01
interfaces.
The Radio modules and RRHs contain both RF BB and RF
functions. They are multistandard and multicarrier transceivers.
RF BB includes RP3-01 interface with multifunctional ASICs and
controller. In addition of TX/RX lineups module has integrated
front end. RFM front end will be implemented with SW tunable
filters. RRH will have fixed full band filters.

EX3.1 (Flexi Multiradio EDGE only)
Known also as ME1 internally
EX3.1 MP1.0 will contain some features delayed from EX3.1
RG20:
EX4 (Flexi EDGE only)
For Flexi EDGE only, main new features: OSC + Packet Abis
Part of EX3.1 code also included but not compatible with Flexi
Multiradio EDGE.
RG25:
EX4.1 (Flexi Multiradio EDGE and Flexi Edge)
Brings the new EX4 features also support for Flexi Multiradio EDGE
Note: As before, it is always recommended to use the latest compatible BTS SW release to gain
the benefits of BTS SW corrections, even if it belongs to newer RG release.
For example EP3 MP3.0 (part of RG10/BSS14) can also be used with S13 (part of BSS13).

RF Module - functional blocks

Radio Module is the 3-branch radio transceiver module. The module
consists of three individual branches designed to transmit and receive
multicarrier signals of multiple radio technologies concurrently.
The module contains the necessary common functionality like the digital
and control circuitry, RP3-1 interface and the needed DC/DC power
conversion.
Each branch contains the transmitter and receiver chains and the front
end filters
The front end filters are software tuneable filters.
For support of legacy site expansion cases, RFM has separate UL diversity
outputs for each branch so that the diversity can be shared between Flexi
Multiradio BTS and a co-sited BTS. Diversity sharing requires the co-sited
BTS operates in the same frequencies within the frequency band. The cosited BTS can be at least NSN Ultra site, Flexi EDGE or BTS plus.
The fans used for module cooling are replaceable.

RF Module DAPD (Digital

PreDistortion) Overview (1/3)
By using linearisation,
amplifier can be operated
close to saturation power
level, and thus with higher
efficiency without detoriating
linearity.

Predistortion realizes the linearization by adding a predistorting signal to the

modulated baseband signal creating complementary nonlinearity compared to
nonlinear transmit chain.
Because of time variance (load, ageing, temperature, ) properties of analogue
components, linearization system is made adaptive with a discontinuous feedback
loop.

FHxA is a 2-branch remote radio head optimized for MIMO usage.
Mechanically RRH is not based on the Flexi module BTS platform but it
is based on the existing FRIF (Franklin) RRH and has the same look and
feel.
Similarly as in radio module the RRH contains also the necessary
common functionality like the necessary digital and control circuitry,
OBSAI interface and the needed DC/DC power conversion.
RRH consists of two individual branches designed to transmit and
receive multicarrier signals of multiple radio technologies concurrently.
Each branch contains the transmitter and receiver chains and the front
end filters. RRH has no receiver diversity.
48VDC input from System Module or external power source. RRH has
integrated class 2 OVP.
RRH uses natural convection cooling, i.e. it does not have cooling fans.

Max. output 4 * 1500W = 6 kW
One fully configured MIBBU can provide power for up to 24 TRXs
Compatible with 19 mechanics -> can be installed in Flexi cabinet installations
Is for indoor use -> Always requires a cabinet. In an outdoor cabinet, requires the FCSA
housing module (with an FCSA control card) to provide IP-protected and temperaturecontrolled space (can also be used for LTE units)
MIBBU consists of:
Power Distribution Unit (WPUB or WPUC) including
Control Unit
Max four Power Units i.e. rectifiers
(WPMB with WPUB or WPMC with WPUC),
which also charge the batteries
Optional batteries

Flexi BTS Power Options

Flexi Power Rectifier (FPRA)
Is a new type of MIBBU
(1/3)

Provides the 48VDC voltage from external AC or DC voltage (batteries)

Compatible with Flexi BTS 19 mechanics and 3HU high. Can be used in
Flexi cabinet installations and without a cabinet.
Brings some new possibilities for Flexi applications:

FPRA outside FCSA => more LTE space inside FCSA

FPRA inside FCOA => more space for Flexi modules inside the cabinet as no
need for FCSA

Consist of:

mechanics mountable to a 19 frame

Power distribution unit with scalable outputs for max. 2 BTSs and max. 3
battery strings
Control Unit (CU) for controlling the FPRA. Alarms generated by CU are normal
EAC-alarms and can be connected to ESMA via the standard EAC-interface or
power alarm interface (FPA).
Max. three 2 kW rectifiers (i.e. max output 3 * 2 kW = 6 kW)
Operating temperature range -33 to +55C
Wide operating voltage range: from 85 to 310VAC
Optional separate batteries (no space for batteries inside the FPRA module)

IP55 compatible, suitable for use in an outdoor cabinet without FCSA

module and for outdoor use without a cabinet with the module front and
