INDUSTRIAL POWER

DISTRIBUTION IN
NUCLEAR FUEL COMPLEX
ABSTRACT
• NFC is one of the unique organizations in
ASIA, for supplying enriched uranium and
zirconium to Nuclear power plants.
• This project involves Power distribution in
NFC and power factor control in NFC and
introduction to FACTS-an advanced system
which overcomes the various demerits in
conventional A.C. transmission system.
CLASSIFICATION OF POWER SUPPLIES

• BASED ON RELIABILITY POINT OF VIEW

->>CLASS-1
->>CLASS-2
->>CLASS-3
->>CLASS-4
• DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS employing in NFC:
->>Radial system
->>Ring main system
SUPPLY SYSTEM
DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IN
N.F.C
• In N.F.C we have 6 Substations Namely
– M.S.D.S.-1
– M.S.D.S.-2
– C.P.A
– Z.F.P
– NUOFP
– NUFAP
• In NFC we are using 2 types of cables.
• XLPE-Cross linked poly ethane.
• PILCA-Paper insulated lead covered
aluminum.
• M.S.D.S-1 (132KV Substation):
Bus coupler ( works as CHANGEOVER switch).
Standby facility.
• M.S.D.S-2 (33Kv Substation):
Bus coupler and Standby facility.
• C.P.A(11Kv Substation):
11KV Will be stepped down to 415V to distribute various
loads such as ‘Pump house-2’ and ‘Services plant’.
• Z.F.P(11KV Substation):
11kv will be fed to load centers 1 & 2 and 11kv will be
stepped down to 6.6kv to feed ZFP 6.6Kv substation.
MAIN STEP DOWN SUBSTATION-1
• 31.5MVA 132/33/11KV ‘YNynoyno’ Transformer.
• Why we are using ‘YNynoyno’ transformer?
• Demerit of star-star connected transformers.
• OLTC Facility ON H.V. Side with 21 tap settings.
• Why we are not using OLTC facility on L.V. side?
• Achieving reliable Standby system:
• In M.S.D.S.-1 we use earth switches for man and
machine protection.
• We are using SF6 G.C.B in M.S.D.S.-1.
• Why we are not using V.C.B in M.S.D.S.-1.?
• Ratings of G.C.B:
SF6 gas pressure =5.3 kg/cm2
Air pressure =14.5 kg/cm2
Current value =3150Amps on 132KV
Voltage =145KV
Lockout pressure =4.2 kg/cm2
• 120kv Expulsion type lightning Arrester at Main T/F.
• Why we are not using Arrester at starting of incoming
feeders.?
• In M.S.D.S.-1 we are using 2.7MVAR capacitor bank
for that we are using restricted earth fault protection.
• TRANSFORMER PROTECTION:
1. Differential protection relay ( 5A)
2. Over current relay (inverse type)
3. Definite time over current relay (2.5A,1Sec)
4. Restricted earth fault relay (64R)
5. Earth fault relay (51)
6. Buchholz relay (Incipient and major faults)
7. Temperature relay (49)
8. Frequency relay (81)
9. Explosion vent (Diaphragm)
11KV FEEDERS FROM MSDS1

– C.P.A.-1
– C.P.A.-2
– Z.F.P.-1
– Z.F.P.-2
– H.C.1
– H.C.2
– NUFAP-1
– NUFAP-2
– NUOFP-1
– NUOFP-2
CAPTIVE POWER GENERATION PLANT
• N.F.C. obtains most of its production during general
shift hours (09:00Hrs to 17:00Hrs).
• M.D. is 12MVA.
• captive power generation capacity is 7.5MVA,
consisting of 3 DG sets, each of 2.5MVA capacity.
-> Voltage :11000volts
-> Current :131amps
-> KVA :2500
-> Excitation :80volts, 4.0Amps
• EMERGENCY TRANSFER
PROTECTION SYSTEMS EMPLOYED FOR CPGP

• Under voltage relay(‘27’)

• Over voltage relay
• Instantaneous under voltage relay
• Auxiliary relay
• Definite time relay
• Earth fault relay
• Field Failure relay
• Definite time reverse power relay
• Over current relay (inverse)
• Negative phase sequence relay
MAIN STEP DOWN SUBSTATION-2
LOADS CONNECTED TO MSDS2:
->>ZFP link-1, ZFP link-2
->>pilger mills
->>Load centers-2,4
->>Annealing furnace No.1
->>Horizontal furnaces
->>New arc melting furnace, Vertical furnace
PROTECTION SYSTEMS EMPLOYED IN MSDS2:
->>Over current relay
->>Differential relay
->>Instantaneous earth fault relay
POWER FACTOR

• What is power factor?

• Why its controlling is Needed?
KVA=KW/Cosø
• Disadvantages of Low power factor:
->>Large KVA rating of equipment
->>Greater Conductor Size
->>Large Copper Losses
->>Poor Voltage Regulation
POWER FACTOR CONTROL IN N.F.C

• We are maintaining power factor value 0.98

to 0.99 by using centralized capacitor banks
at MSDS-1 and MSDS-2.
• Why Centralized Capacitor Banks.?
• In MSDS-1 we are using capacitor bank of
capacity 2.7MVAR but we are utilizing only
1.8MVAR as per the requirement.
• In MSDS2 we are using capacitor bank of
capacity 1.8MVAR.
FACTS
• Demerits involved in conventional A.C.
transmission system:
->>Loop flows
->>Parallel flows
->>Ferranti Effect
• Definition of FACTS:
• Types of compensations:
->>Series compensation
->>Shunt compensation
->>Static VAR compensators
CONCLUSION
• This project involves study of power distribution
in Nuclear fuel complex and protection and
proper utilization of various classes of power
supplies.
