-is the PRODUCTION OF SOUND
The combination of which is the
SPEECH that become symbols that
represent meanings to both speaker
and listener.
-the human voice is capable of
various dimensions making identify
one person from another.

The distinctive characteristics of voice


that makes it pleasant or unpleasant to
hear is its QUALITY.

VOICE QUALITY
Often referred as timbre
or tone color

Voice quality can identify one


person from another.
Change in voice quality is an
indicator of your mood.
The flexibility of the voice makes it
possible to develop a good voice
quality. This can be further
enhanced and developed by
knowing and practicing the different
vocal qualities the human voice has.

FIVE COMMON VOICE


QUALITIES

THE NORMAL VOICE

-In conversation, you speak naturally showing little or no


emotion.
-this is the normal quality of your voice.
Needed to communicate the idea properly.

THE BREATHY VOICE


-when you want to create an atmosphere of secrecy
and mystery you use a breathy or a whispery voice.
-is an aspirate quality of the voice best heard in the
stage whisper

THE FULL VOICE


-in many forms of public speaking
when the voice must be projected to a
greater distance or when occasion is
formal and dignified, you use the
full, deep quality of your voice.
-known as the orotund (round
mouth) quality.

THE CHESTY VOICE


-a deep hollow voice as it coming from
a deep and empty cave.
-has a pectoral quality

THE THIN VOICE


-this voice quality is thin and highpitched, the high pitch being its chief
characteristic.
-this falsetto quality occurs in
extreme fatigue, weakening, old age,
ill-health or in extreme excitement.

Key Tone
-this is the general pitch level and it varies from
person to person.
Voice Inflection
-the change in pitch occurring between syllables
or words.
Melody Patterns
-rhythm and swing of your phrases and
sentences form into a continuous pattern of
changing pitch, as the mood changes, this
melodic pattern also changes.

Loudness or intensity refers to the effect


of a sound on the ear-its loudness or
softness.

VOICE INTENSITY
The FORCE with which you speak
varies in degree and form Degree
refers to the amount of force applied
so that in whispering only a low degree
of force is used whereas in shouting, a
high degree of force is applied.

DEGREES OF EMPHASIS-force can be


applied in varying degree of emphasis,
such as sharp reduction or a sharp
increase in intensity.
FORMS OF INTENSITY
Form is the manner in which force is applied.

o Effusive form-applied gradually but firmly


(restrained feelings, grandeur, dignity, or
reverence)
o Expulsive form-firmly but rapidly
(decisiveness, vigor, and sincerity)
o Explosive form-sudden outburst (extreme
anger, sudden fear, and other strong
emotion)

Speaking is characterized by variations in


speed.

RATE OF SPEECH
-it is very important to vary your rate
of speaking to avoid monotony.
Quantity in Speech Rate
This is the length of time that is
spent in the actual utterance of
vowel sounds within words and the
duration varies according to the
mood or sentiment being expressed.
