Bevel gear set:Similar to the conventional


open differential there are
two
differential
gears
located on cross shaft &
two side gears splined to
the axle shaft.
These gears are precision
forged for high impact
strength.

BClutch Subassembly _ Construction


One of the side gear has
camramp
machined
on
back face. These ramps
provides
corresponding
ramp on cam plate.
Also there are three pin like
detents on cam plate &
having three hole on the
back face of the gear.
These
detents
avoids
ramping of cam plate till
the predetermined torque
is applied to the gear of
cam plate.

1. Cam ramp engages
with the ramp surface
of the gear.

2. If the predetermined
torque is applied to the
cam plate, it ramps up
over the cam profile of
the side gear. It leads
to axial movement of
the cam plate away
fromsymmetrical
the side gear.
In both direction of rotation of the cam, the
profile
of ramp helps to have axial movement of cam plate in only one
direction.

Main shaft assly is working on principle of centrifugal governor.
Main shaft RPM < 100 :- Centrifugal force on the weight is balanced
by torsion spring
Main shaft RPM > 100 :- Centrifugal force exceeds spring force & the
balance weights gets moves away from each other it gets arrested by
locking pawl.
The locking action is possible in clock wise as well as counter

Locking action stops the rotation of main shaft.


RPM of the clutch plate gets arrested by main shaft.
But at the same time the side gear is rotating with the spinning wheel,
hence The relative movement between side gear & clutch plate.
Relative movement causes ramping action of the clutch plate over the
side gears ramp.
Ramping action develops axial force on the clutch plates.
Axial force develops frictional torque on friction plates, hence locking
of low traction side gear with differential housing.

When the vehicle is traveling


over 20mph the counter
weight rotates along lay shaft
axis
under
influence
of
centrifugal force.
As counter weight is integral
part of locking pawl , locking
pawl moves away from locus
of lock notch.
It helps to avoid locking of
main shaft at high speed
condition of vehicle.

Mechanical locking LSD _ Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages:1. Automatic locking & supplies equal torque to both wheel only at
low speed of vehicle.
2. The Differential G.B. can be designed with highest bias ratio as it
is not going to lock at high speed.
3. Even 4x2 vehicle with this differential develops greater traction if
compared with 4x4 with simple LSD.
Disadvantages:Cost, Number of moving parts hence maintenance cost little bit
higher.
