INTRODUCTION
The purpose of the anti termite treatment
is to provide a barrier against the sub
terrain termites.
This treatment is broadly classified into 1) Pre-constructional anti termite treatment.
2) Post-constructional anti termite
treatment.
) Pre-constructional anti termite treatment
is a process in which soil treatment is
applied to a building in its early stages of
construction.
) Additional anti termite treatment is done
incase termite infestation is found in an
existing building.
) These treatments are usually done with
the help of chemicals and are handled
exclusively by professionals.

TYPES OF TREATMENT
Partial Treatment This technique allows a wide variety
of treatment strategies Ex: treatment of inner(walls,
columns) and outer(porches, patios) perimeter, bath traps,
expansion joints, stress cracks, portions of framing, and
treatment of the attached garage.
Spot Treatment Any treatment which concerns a limited,
defined area less than ten (10) linear or square feet that is
intended to protect a specific location or "spot.
Baiting System Termite baits consist of paper,
cardboard, or other acceptable termite food, combined
with a slow-acting substance lethal to termites. This type
of treatment may include interior and/or perimeter
placements.

SIGNS OF TERMITE
INFESTATION :

Wood that sounds hollow.

Mud tubes on exterior walls .
Any cracked or bubbling paint.
Discarded wings from swarmer.

SITE PREPARATION
1. Removal of all trees, stumps, logs or roots from the building site.
2. Remove all concrete form work if left anywhere, leveling pegs,
timber off-cuts and other building debris from the area to be
treated.
3. If the soil to be treated is sandy or porous, preliminary
moistening will be required to fill the capillary spaces in soil in
order to prevent the loss of emulsion through piping or excessive
percolations.
4. In the event of water logging of foundation, the water shall be
pumped out before application of chemical emulsion and it
should be applied only when the soil is absorbent.
5. On clays and other heavy soils where penetration is likely to be
slow and on sloping sites, where run-off of the treating solution is
likely to occur, the surface of the soil should be scarified to a
depth of 75mm at least.

STANDARDS TO BE
FOLLOWED:
IS 4015 (part-1&2) Guide for handling
cases of pesticide poisoning.
IS 6313 (part-1) Code of practice for
anti-termite measures in building
constructional purposes.
IS 6313 (part-2) Code of practice for
anti-termite measures in building pre
constructional chemical treatment.
IS 8944 Specification for
Chloropyrifos emulsified concentrates.
IS 632 Specification of Lindane.

TREATMENTS
PRE CONSTRUCTIONAL
TREATMENT
The pre constructional treatment is to be applied during
the construction stages of the sub structure to the plinth
level.
Treating the soil completely with insecticides before
constructing any slab is the most common method of
anti-termite treatment forming a barrier between the
soil and the building. Thus preventing any termite
infestation.
The chemical treatment is done as follows:
1. The sides and bottom of the excavations, are treated prior to
foundation work.
2. Where slabs on grade will be built, by drilling holes and pouring
chemicals into the soil.
3. The perimeter of the site is drilled with holes and filled with
chemicals.
4. The bed piping is treated by filling chemicals in an area around the

POST CONSTRUCTIONAL
TREATMENT
In case of normal wall load bearing structures, columns pits,
wall trenches and basement, the treatment shall be at 5
litres/sqm. or surface area of the bottom and sides to a height
of at least 300mm.
After the foundation work, the sides shall be treated at 7.5
litres/sqm. of vertical surface of substructure on each side.
After the earth filling is done, treatment shall be done by
rodding the earth at 150mm centres close to wall surface and
spraying the chemical with the above dose i.e. 7.5 litres/sqm.
In case of framed structure, the treatment shall start at a
depth of 500mm below ground level. From this depth the
backfill around the columns, beams and R.C.C. basement walls
shall be treated at 7.5 litres / sqm. of the vertical and at 5 litres
/ sqm. for the horizontal surface at the bottom in the trenches /
pits.

In RCC foundations, the concrete is dense being a 1:2:4

(cement :fine aggregates : coarse aggregates, by
volume) mix or richer, the termites are unable to
penetrate it. It is, therefore, unnecessary to start the
treatment from the bottom of excavations.
If there exists a concrete cover or masonry apron
around the walls of your building, holes are drilled as
close as possible to the plinth wall about 300mm (1ft)
apart from each other. Insecticide is then poured, so
that it reaches the soil to eliminate the termites
present there and to stop them from re-infesting. If
your building is on pillars, the holes are drilled around
the pillars and insecticide poured into the soil.

PRECAUTIONS DURING
TREATMENT
Utmost care shall be taken to see that the chemical barrier is complete
and continuous. Each part of the area shall receive the prescribed
dosage of chemical emulsion.
Once formed, the treated soil barrier shall not be disturbed. If by
chance , treated soil barriers are disturbed, immediate steps shall be
taken to restore the continuity and completeness of the barrier system.
These chemicals can have an adverse effect upon health when
absorbed through the skin, inhaled as vapours or spray mist or
swallowed, thus usage of gloves, masks are strictly recommended.
The containers should be clearly labelled and should be stored
carefully out of the reach of children and pets animal. They should be
crushed and buried in covered trenches after use.
See to that the spraying is done along the direction of the wind.
Chemicals should be sprayed in the absence of heat(sun, artificial
heating systems)
