the Army for his chronic lower back problems,


Kennedy joined theU.S. Navy. Kennedy was
anensignserving in the office of theSecretary of

Republican candidateRichard Nixon, then vice
president, in the first televisedU.S. presidential
debatesin U.S. history.
O Kennedy's campaign gained momentum after the first
debate, and he pulled slightly ahead of Nixon in most
polls. On November 8, Kennedy defeated Nixon in one
of the closest presidential elections of the 20th century.
In the national popular vote Kennedy led Nixon by just
two-tenths of one percent (49.7% to 49.5%).

investigations, thesniperwhoassassinated John F.
Kennedy, the35th President of the United States, inDallas,
Texas, on November 22, 1963.
O Oswald was a formerU.S. Marinewho defected to
theSoviet Unionin October 1959. He lived in the Soviet
Union until June 1962, at which time he returned to the
United States. Oswald was initially arrested for the murder
of police officerJ. D. Tippit, who was killed on a Dallas
street approximately 45 minutes after President Kennedy
was shot. Oswald would later be charged with the murder
of President Kennedy as well but denied shooting anybody.

O Jack Leon Ruby(March 25, 1911 January 3, 1967)

was anightcluboperator inDallas, Texas. On November


24, 1963, Ruby fatally shotLee Harvey Oswald who was
in police custody after being charged with themurder of
John F. Kennedytwo days earlier. Ruby shot him while
Oswald has been transferred from police headquarters
to the county jail, in full view of television cameras
broadcasting live.
O A Dallas jury found Ruby guilty of murdering Oswald,
and Ruby was sentenced to death. Later, Ruby appealed
his conviction and was granted a new trial. As the date
for his new trial was being set, Ruby became ill and died
of apulmonary embolismdue tolung cancer.
