Strain Gages

Luana de Carvalho

Strain
Strain is the amount of deformation of a
object due to an applied force. More
specifically, strain () is defined as the
fractional change in length.

Strain gage
Strain gage is a device whose electrical
resistance varies in proportion to the amount of
strain in the device. The most widely used gage
is the bonded metallic strain gage.

Wheatstone Bridge
The Wheatstone Bridge circuit is the most
popular choice to convert a small change in
resistance into a measurable voltage. In fact, it
will be shown below thatVmeasis proportional
to.

Wheatstone Bridge
The sensitivity of the bridge to strain can be
doubled by making both gages active in a halfbridge configuration.

Wheatstone Bridge
To increase the sensitivity of the circuit we can
making all four of the arms of the bridge active
strain gages in a full-bridge configuration.

Rosette configuration
Astrain gauge rosetteis simply three
conventional axial gauges placed close together
and at prescribed orientations relative to each
other. Each gauge in a rosette is independent of
the others, with each gauge having its own
Wheatstone bridge circuit.
