FUSE

INVENTION OF FUSE

INVENTION OF FUSE
1847 - Breguetrecommended use of reducedsection conductors to protect telegraph stations
fromlightning strikes; by melting, the smaller wires
would protect apparatus and wiring inside the
building.

1864 - A variety of wire or foil fusible elements

were in use to protect telegraph cables and lighting
installations

INVENTION OF FUSE

The main components of a standard

fuse unit consist of the following
items:
METAL FUSE ELEMENT
SET OF CONTACTS
SUPPORT BODY

The major two categories of

fuses include:
Low Voltage Fuse - In this category all fuses up to
1.5 kV can be included. But the most typical
voltage levels for low voltage fuses are 500 V, 690
V and 750 V
various low voltage fuses

The major two categories of

fuses include:
High Voltage Fuses - All fuses used on power
systems from 1.5 kV up to 138 kV are categorized
as high voltage fuses. High voltage fuses are used
to protect instrument transformers used for
electricity metering, or for small power
transformers where the expense of a circuit
breaker is not warranted. For example, in
distribution systems, a power fuse may be used to
protect a transformer serving 13 houses.

Various High Voltage Fuses

High voltage high power fuses are standalone protective

switching devices used to 138 kV. They are used in power
supply networks and for distribution uses. The most
frequent application is in transformer circuits, with further
uses in motor circuits and capacitor banks. These type of
fuses may have an impact pin to operate a switch
mechanism, so that all three phases are interrupted if any
one fuse blows.

CIRCUIT BREAKER
What is circuit breaker?
an absolutely essential device
in the modern world, and one of
the most important safety
mechanisms in your home.
an automatically operated
electrical switch designed to
protect an electrical circuit from
damage caused by overload or
short circuit. Its basic function is
to detect a fault condition and
interrupt current flow.

According to the voltage level of

installation types of circuit breaker are
referred as:
Low Voltage Circuit Breaker
Low-voltage (less than 1,000 VAC) types are
common in domestic, commercial and industrial
application, and
include
MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker)rated current not
more than 100 A. Trip characteristics normally not
adjustable. Thermal or thermal-magnetic operation.
Breakers illustrated above are in this category.

According to the voltage level of

installation types of circuit breaker are
referred as:
Medium Voltage Circuit Breaker

Medium Voltage Circuit Breaker

Medium voltage circuit can be classified by medium
used to extinguish the arc:

INVENTION OF RELAYS

Relay is the firs

electronic device ever
invented

INVENTION OF RELAYS
A relay is a remote switch controlled by
current, magnetism, or temperature.
The relay was invented in 1835 by
Joseph Henry (1979-1878), an American
scientist. It made modern telegraphy
possible and evolved into the repeaterthus the relay- a remote controlled
switch, was in effect the first
( Electronic) device, though not anything
involving crystals, diodes, vacuum tubes
etc. The first invented Relay was used as
part of his telegraph system circa 1844.
It was used in long distance telegraph
circuits, repeating the signal coming in
from one circuit and re-transmitting it to
another. Since then, relays found
extensive use in telephone exchanges
and early computers to perform logical
operations.
