Whaling was an important activity in 1800s.

It declined with the discovery of

underground sources of oil in the 1850s.

The mid-1800s were the era of the Yankee

Their days ended when metal steamships were

developed in England in the 1860s.

By the late 1800s, the sea no longer

Maple Syrup
For a brief period each spring
in Vermont its sugaring time.
When days are warm, but
nights are cool, sap begins to
run in the sugar maple trees.
The maple sap is collected
and then boiled down in sugar
houses until it becomes maple
syrup.
Maple syrup is good on vanilla
ice cream and pancakes.
