CGM is a company that co-operates with ABB worldwide since 2004. We have long term experience of
developing and manufacturing sturdy and ergonomic operator desks. Due to early ergonomic
requirements from Scandinavian authorities, we have developed a unique concept that really create
true operator alertness.

The demo-laboratory area is frequently visited by a lot of customers from all over the world. In this
area we can simulate and show a complete range of products and functionalities. Things that really
are of interest when a customer in an early phase needs to find the right parameters to create a new
control room or modernize / consolidate.

CGM also supports ABB in projects with layouts and delivering normal standard or customized
consoles where the EOW solution, for some reason, is not of interest.
Our focus is to create attractive operative centers / control rooms that generate a more prosperous
and alert operator that work in harmony with technology.

A visit in the CGM-ABB Future Operations Centre is an eye opening journey

Researching new concepts, materials, shapes and technologies

Exploring the relationships between KPIs and operator comforts
Translating ergonometric measures into economic results

The attention to Human Factors is one of four pillars that create operator effectiveness
According to research, nearly 80 per cent of downtime in production is preventable and half is due to operator error. Today the working conditions
in many operative centers or control rooms are designed by technicians in an early phase or designed to impress visitors rather than putting the
operators in focus. Misplanned 24-7 environments can be depressing, unwelcoming, uncomfortable can therefore very easy create both fatigue
and bored operators. By bringing in ABB/CGM early in the planning process of the whole control room with adjacent areas we save a lot of cost
and time. We create planning solutions that focus on the operator needs and solves many problems for the customers. With the latest interactive
control room planning programs and world wide experience we work cost efficient in projects and solve problems before the control room is built.
A modern control room or operative center planned and furnished with the Extended Operator Workplace (EOW-x concept), which have strong
intelligent integrated functions with System 800xA, we induce more alert, less stressed, happier and much safer operators. ABB is the only DCS
player that really can show operator effectiveness in an ergonometric human factor perspective in reality.
The answer to truly turning fatigue and distraction into operator alertness and proaction is the Extended Operator Workplace.

Attention to Human Factors in general

The EOW-x contains the latest flexible motorized console technology. Motorized adjustable to individuals at the touch of a button with adjustment
alternative totally superior to anything else to be compared with on the market. The multi client keyboard allows the operator to switch easily
between different 800xA clients and handle hotkeys which also reduce mouse clicks. With the integrated motorized close large overview unit we
have integrated a directional sound system and integrated an individual high frequency dimmable lighting system.
The console has also a built in live video camera system with a PA speaker system for public announcements. On top of that the console is
prepared for a micro ventilation system so each operator can adjust to their own suitable temperature. The intelligent ergonomic freedom prevents
operator fatigue and boredom like no one else than ABB can offer in both brown- and greenfield projects.
The knowledge from our experience with ABB customers has also been used to develop new cutting edge solutions. The highly ergonomic
operator desk that CGM has been manufacturing for ABB together with the design of the operative centre or control room has truly attracted
customers in an early phase and has set new standards for modern thinking that gain operation and situation awareness.
EOW-x concept gives you the tools to make the operators direct alert in case of a critical situation and act fast and correct. With multiple monitors,
a large screen and a unique keyboard to control the complete operator interface you stay focused at the task and the process at all times.

Operators ergonomic benefits demonstrated and measured in a scientific way

The newly invented micro ventilation system should be individually adjusted by each
operator to achieve a temperature suitable for each individual. A scientific experiment
with operators will be conducted in 2010.

The main goal is to measure improvements for the operators that we can create in a well planned,
ergonomic, state of the art, environment. The micro ventilation should also be connected with
System 800xA. For example we would like to automatically produce a cooler area around the
operator before an assumed critical situation.

Remote Graphics Unit package

This image illustrates the Remote Graphics Unit and how it is connected. This is a part of
the EOW-x which enables to house the PC clients in an other room which improves sound,
temperature and EMF conditions around the operator.
Three remote graphical units with fiber optic cables and
interface cards are included. The small remote units are
mounted in the operator desk.
Removing all computers from the control room further lower
the noise level and the temperature for the operators. It also
makes it much easier to keep clean around the operator.

High performance operator chairs

A CGM mobile storage solution doubles as a relief and short-discussion zone

This unit is sometimes good to use right behind an operator for several reasons

Meeting tables of different sizes and many times customized to fit the right purposes

We also customize our operator desk to fit certain needs. The below picture has a radius
of 6000mm on the working surface instead of our standard which is 3000mm.
This desk has been equipped with a customized drawer below the working surface, which
follows the height adjustments up and down.

The main reason for the customized radius in this project

was that the operator desks shall follow a predefined
radius of the front projected Megawall display.
The 8m wide Megawall area has a given radius and a
given distance to the two operators, who need a good
overview of the actual process.

We can also adapt different hardware platforms and the choice differs from project to
project. This is an example for handling large LCD screens. In some projects the
customer decides early on the type of large display hardware that should be used.

On many occasions there is a greater benefit from

getting the large screen closer to each operator instead
of placing them fixed on the wall.
There are many more advantages with the integrated
EOW-x concept and should not be compared with this
type of simplified solution of handling bigger screens.

This picture is an example of handling big LCD screens in a more simplified way. A separate
system handling the pictures on the big screen and showing static overview pictures.

In this project the large screens are just showing more or less static pictures for the
operators. Minor interaction with the big LCD screen is possible for the operator.

In many projects we have provided a second row of monitor arms that are attached to the
lower monitor holder. This is the easiest and cheapest way to provide operators with an
extended amount of visual information. The EOW-x solution is a better choice.
The easy and efficient overview achieved with the use of the EOW is normally not possible
for the operator with this method of stacking small monitors on top of each other.

Flat screen holder arrangement fitting our operator desks is an own developed
standard and the sturdy construction handle up to 30 wide screen.

A large curved common visualization wall can also be built up with the same 3D Perception
technology as ABB uses for the EOW. This method of applying fixed projection technology in
the ceiling is called a Megawall.
Valuable space is saved with this method of creating a common overview for several
operators. But unlike the EOW, it is no longer a unique tool that can be used for individual
operators or a group of operators in, for example, a critical situation.

This picture is from the installation stage of an operation centre that shall supervise and
support several different control room locations. By gathering specialists into one common
operation centre to analyze data, this customer is focusing on predictable maintenance.

It is important to define what the large screens are for. What type of information shall be
shown and who will use it. Static or dynamic information? The operators tool or not?
Should the big visualization wall be there to impress visitors with a wow effect?
It is important to handle this kind of questions early in a process, otherwise there will be
difficult to find the best long term solution.
This operative centre is built up with a large wall of back projected cubes. The size of the
room makes it difficult to place the operators further away from the cube walls.

In this case the operator to the

right will have difficulties
reading the information on the
left screens and vice versa.

A very nice design of a modern control room in many ways, where the large curved
display of cubes really gives visitors a so called WOW effect.
This way of building large visual screens will often completely fail to serve the operators
in critical situations, even in an environment where the large display wall is built from
floor to ceiling. The information can act as a support for other people who need to get a
grip of the overall status of the process, but with modern technical developments this can
be done in a far better way.

This layout is similar with the previous project but here they used a front projected
technique to provide a seamless Megawall instead of rear projected cubes.
A front projected Megawall
saves crucial space.

Keep in mind that there are no golden rules that fit all operative centres or control rooms.
Each project lives its own life based on the existing organization, technical experience,
culture and former ways of working.

Time to browse some more planning proposals and ideas that can improve a
future successful operative centre.

A modern way of planning a more collaborative environment with new HMI and new
technology that in turn uses new intelligent interaction.

New modern Multi Functional Touch displays with integrated telecommunication systems in close
connection with the System 800xA really improves the overall noise situation throughout the whole
operative centre. This allowed us to move operator areas closer to each other while at the same
time improving the collaboration between different process areas.
A movie from this project has been made and also presents a lot of good ideas.
To download the 60 Mb movie (8 minutes long), and depending on software and hardware
configuration, choose between Zipped version or direct show in Windows Media player

Even if the space exists for rear projection cube solution, the Close Large OverView
projection (EOW) is many times a better ergonomic solution.

In a lot of projects we see control rooms that are planned too big. The main reason is that
the early involved contractors some times has a poor understanding on how a modern
control room, or operative centre, should be planned in a modern way with modern
technique. They calculate the need of space with the traditional technique and methods.

This layout is an example of a configuration in a smaller existing control room and the
EOW solution saves a lot of space and induce collaboration in a better way.

The Extended Operator Workplace concept is unified control environment featuring the
very latest in console technology that improves operator performance.
With the right tools for their task and an attractive, ergonomic environment in which to
work, they do a better, more effective job of increasing plant availability, safety and
profitability.

In the end of this section we also describe different way of planning 24-7 environments and also
comment some of the layouts. There is a lot of benefits being involved early in projects.

End of section 3

With our conceptual thinking we are able to improve new 24 7 environments. We use
the numbered key element as a guideline in both small and big projects.
1. Full ergonomic operator desks
2. Hardwired technology handling
3. Separated printer room
4. Personnel lockers with drawer unit
5. Support / meeting / emergency area
6. Micro pause area
7. Separate recreation room
8. Open / closed environment regulation
9. Visitor and production over view area
10. Common open meeting areas
11. WPO area
12. EOW, Megawall or LSD area

Above numbered items is used as

very rough a checklist when we
create a layout no matter the size
of the room or choice of

format) to see the importance of our listed key elements to take into consideration when
improving the environment in a future operative centre

This is the System 800xA collaboration layout concept for modern operative centres
The old term Control
Room should be used
when the operators are
sitting close to the
process.
Operative Centre is the
correct term to use
when several functions
are supervised and
monitored from a
common room, which
does not necessarily
need to be close to the
actual processes.

The following slides

show some close up
3D pictures from this
specific centralization
project, with some
comments.

A close-up 3D view from the conceptual collaboration layout with comments

The traditional fixed console where the main purpose is often to house the computer and
screens is a way of thinking that we try to avoid. Operator desk is the right word for an
ergonomic workplace where operators are working. Computers should be stored in a nearby
room and this way of thinking greatly improves the environment and ergonomic situation for the
operators.

Visitors get a professional presentation of the process. This Production OverView area is
also very useful for the active operator before and after shift handover procedures.

Example of a curved Megawall as a visitor area presentation

The Production OverView area is something that can also impress

visitors without disturbing the operator.

A close-up 3D view from the conceptual collaboration layout

The ESD or CAP desk function is a time consuming task to deal with when it relates to
design and construction. We have made the design in the same way we use for our
operator desks, which is very much appreciated from the instrumentation department.

The meeting desk configuration could also be motorized rotatable from 0 to 180 grader.

This function should have a unique name like VDRCC (Versatile Direction Rotating
Collaboration Concept).

Previously described key elements that aim to fulfill the intended tasks may be used in
smaller operative centers. The EOW solution saves space and improves the ergonomics.

Planning of an FPSO (offshore vessel) with EOW functionality in a small room. Functions
and locations of adjacent areas need to be discussed and this will give good support in
critical situations.
Even in these small areas we can use several of our described methods that generate a
superior environment for the whole control room including adjacent areas.

CGM can support ABB early in but also in a later phase in some few different projects.
It is really important to receive information from customers very early in projects. Even if there is no
vast amount of information available a simplified sketch of the actual control room could be valuable.

End of section 4

A common way to describe the equipment needed for a total control room tends to be
very technical and the overall planning and ergonomic discussion are easily forgotten. It
is very common that all focus is placed on a purely technical level.
It is important at a very early stage to consider the fact that techniques should also work
together with operators to maintain the best long term result in a successful and modern
operative centre.

Describing technical needs is important, but together we can package exactly the
same in a more easily understood way.

This is a common way for CGM to translate a block system diagram

With 3D visualized pictures it easier to understand how one or several operators

should interact with the technique in both normal and critical situations.

The second step to creating a better understanding is to make different proposals in 3D.

By making different proposals at an early stage, a lot of obstacles can be

avoided while we make big improvements to the environment.
When we process these types of questions with customers early in a project,
we can contribute to substantial cost savings. It is expensive to plan and build
the control room in a poor way.

To know what is the right or wrong way to organize and position different workplaces we
need to ask questions and collect information regarding the actual project.

Its important to involve the operators in the early planning discussion.

When we have assembled enough information we are able to plan and improve the environment for
both the modernization of an existing control room and the design of newly built operative centers.

In this specific project there is a big Megawall in the centre for overall process status of all
areas. The different area operators have their own EOW where they are in control. In critical
situations the shift supervisor takes control over the big Megawall area while the operators
use their large personal overview to get control over each process.

If CGM are involved early in projects we are also able to save booth time and cost

This is an example how we can transform a traditional way of planning a

modernization. Cooperation with ABB worldwide builds positive experience.
This actual layout is planned in a very traditional way and handles 16 different operator
areas. The layout has no possibility to handle future expansion with this traditional type
of planning, which is intended to create a big open space behind all operators.
With this type of planning the collaboration between different areas suffers.
This is a kind of robotic way of placing operators to fulfill traditional old guide lines. It
is also most likely difficult to attract the new generation of highly educated operators to
work in this more or less machine hall.

The below layout is a more collaborative environment between different areas, a much more
pleasant environment and overall a better planned control room for critical situations.
This so called collaborative way of working layout can handle 20 different operator areas and
with this layout it is possible to handle future expansion. We create modern and effective
operative centers.

In this centralization project where three big areas should be working together is a NASA
rocket launcher centre type of thinking which generates different viewing distances for the
operators.
This layout has been made by architects that follow traditional inputs from the customers
project team and which look nice at first appearance.

This is the result when CGM together with ABB brought in a new type of
thinking together with the project team. In cooperation with the architect we
generate a much better way to plan the new centralized operative centre.
This way of planning also houses many operators but it is designed for better
collaboration in a more attractive working environment. Compare it to the previous slide.

Section six gives 32 example of proposal layouts we done in different ABB projects
Click on the left icon to come back to this start up selection
page or chose the forward button to to the right for next section
Move ahead forward from this slide to browse 32 planning examples without any longer descriptions
where CGM support ABB in different projects.
To affect and save money for the end customer it is extremely important that CGM gets involved before
the request is done. When the request has been send it is not easy to improve the layout.

Planning proposal for a cement plant

Picture taken before centralization. This existing control room is now houses three
different process areas and is prepared for the fourth future cement process.
Our modern and collaborative way of planning an operative centre saves a lot of costs
for the customer when we enter a project in an early stage.

This project is number 7 of 50 in the detailed extended presentation.

This planning picture shows the control room for the specific cement process on
previous slide where we planned a new control room in existing control room area.
The new operative centre created a good collaboration between each modernized area.

This is the result. In this cement plant project the customer decided to use the existing CCTV
monitors to save costs. We therefore equipped each operator desk with an upper shelf.
However our operator desks are possible to upgrade with a lot of functionalities in later
modernization steps. From this centralized control room only fixed operator desks was
chosen but it could easily be upgraded with motorized height adjustment and EOW-x
functionality in the future.
