1202 CDMA RF Optimization - 2

Call Setup Operational Measurements

There are three
different times
when a call may
fail: 1) before
resources are
allocated, 2)
when the mobile
is transitioning
from the paging
or access
channel to the
traffic channel,
or 3) after the
mobile is on the
traffic channel.

Call setup failures before resources are

allocated are classified as:
Screened Calls
Call setup was interrupted due to reasons such
as an unauthenticated mobile, a mobile
initiated release, or a land side release
Call setup failure due to lack of physical resources
No T-1 trunks
No SBS selector elements
No BTS traffic channel elements
Call setup failure due to timeouts and software
faults

1202 CDMA RF Optimization - 3

Call Setup Measurements

From MTX07
onwards, the
CM registers
will handle page
retries. This will
make some
CAU OMs
redundant.

CM Termination Registers
CDMAPRS1 - CDMA page response 1
(MTXSYS1)
indicates that a page response was received
in response to the initial page request.
CDMAPRS2 - CDMA page response 2
(MTXSYS1)
indicates that a page response was received
in response to the second page attempt after
the CAU has timed out on the first page
attempt.

1202 CDMA RF Optimization - 4

Call Setup Measurements

CAU call event
measurements
are classified in
one of the
following three
groups:

CAU OM Groups
CAU Call Processing Sector (CAUCPSCT)
tracks events based on the primary sector
except for hard handoff events. Hard handoff
events are tracked based on the target sector.
CAU Call Processing System (CAUCPSYS)
tracks events on a per-CAU basis.
CAU Resource Manager (CAURM)
also tracks events on a per-CAU basis.

Formulas for Call Setup Failures

Use these
formulas to
calculate
system wide
call setup
performance.

Origination Setup Failures

(CAUOBLKS) / (CAUOATTS)] x 100

Termination Setup Failures

(CAUTBLKS) / (CAUPGRES)] x 100
or
(CAUTBLKS) / (CDMAPRS1+CDMAPRS2)] x100

Hard Handoff Setup Failures

[ (CAUHBLKS) / (CAUHATTS)] x 100

1202 CDMA RF Optimization 11

Formulas for Call Setup Failures

This formula
should be used
to determine the
percentage of
failures
attributed to
screened calls

Screened Calls
% Screened Calls = (# of Screened Calls / Calls Attempted)
x 100
# of Screened Calls = CAUORLS + CAUTRLS
+ CAUHRLS + CAUORODR
+ RMUNSO
Total Calls Attempted = CAUOATTS + CAUHATTS
+ CAUPGRES

1202 CDMA RF Optimization 12

Formulas for Call Setup Failures

This formula is
used to
determine the
percentage of
call setup
failures that
were due to no
physical
resources.

Call Setup Failure due to lack of physical

resources
% due to lack of physical resources = (# of physical
resource blocks / calls attempted) x 100
# of physical resource blocks = RMNORREQ
+ CAUERSFL
Total Calls Attempted = CAUOATTS + CAUHATTS
+ CAUPGRES

1202 CDMA RF Optimization 13

Formulas for Call Setup Failures

This formula is
used to
calculate the
percentage of
call setup
failures due to a
lack of traffic
channel
elements.

Call Setup Failure due to lack of Traffic

Channel Elements
% due to lack of TCEs = (CAUNOTCE / Total Calls
Attempted) x 100

Total Calls Attempted = CAUOATTS + CAUHATTS

+ CAUPGRES

1202 CDMA RF Optimization 14

Formulas for Call Setup Failures

This formula is
used to
calculate the
percentage of
call setup
failures that are
due to a lack of
Walsh Codes

Call Setup Failures due to lack of Walsh

codes
% due to lack of Walsh Codes = ( CAUNOWCD / Total Call
Attempts) x 100
Total Calls Attempted = CAUOATTS + CAUHATTS
+ CAUPGRES

1202 CDMA RF Optimization 15

Formulas for Call Setup Failures

This formula is
used to
calculate the
percentage of
call setup
failures that are
due to a lack of
forward
capacity

Call Setup Failures due to lack of forward

capacity
% due to no forward capacity = ( CAUFWCAP / Total Calls
Attempted) x 100
Total Calls Attempted = CAUOATTS + CAUHATTS
+ CAUPGRES

1202 CDMA RF Optimization 16

Formulas for Call Setup Failures

This formula is
used to
calculate the
percentage of
call setup
failures that are
due to timeouts
and software
faults.

Call Setup Failures due to timeouts and

software faults
% due to timeouts and SW faults = (Number of timeouts
and software faults / Total Calls Attempted) x 100
Number of timeouts and SW faults = RMSRMTO +
RMSRMNAK +
CAUESWFL
Total Calls Attempted = CAUOATTS + CAUHATTS
+ CAUPGRES

1202 CDMA RF Optimization 17

These formulas
are used to
calculate the
percentage of
RF access
failures. Notice
that handoff
attempts are not
taken into
account in the
top formula.

Formulas for Call Setup Failures

Call Setup RF Access Failure (handoff not included)
% Call Setup RF Access Failures = (CAUERLFL / Total
Calls Attempted) x 100
Total Calls Attempted = CAUOATTS
+ CAUPGRES

Hard Handoff RF Access Failures

% Hard Handoff RF Access Failures = [CAUHRLFL) /
CAUHATTS)] x 100

1202 CDMA RF Optimization 18

For validity
reasons,
dropped call
performance
OMs and
formulas should
be referenced
as in either
core coverage
or non-core
coverage areas

Dropped Call Performance

CAU Measurements
CAUDROPR - CAU dropped call RF
(CAUCPSCT)
CAUDROPN - CAU dropped call Network

CAU Dropped Call Percentage Formula

% dropped calls = (Number of dropped calls / Number of
Established calls) x 100
Number of dropped calls = CAUDROPR
** CAUDROPN can be added into the number of dropped
calls, but most occurrences of that OM are error cases and
should not happen.
Number of established calls = CAUOSUCC + CAUTSUCC
+ CAUHSUCC

Hard Handoff Performance

This formula is
used to
calculate the
hard handoff
performance.

Hard Handoff CM Performance Formula

% of successful hard handoffs = (number of successful
handoffs / number of attempted hard handoffs) x 100
Number of successful hard handoffs = CHOSRCSU
Number of attempted hard handoffs =
CHOSRCSU - ( CHOBLKS + CHONSRCR + CHOSRRLS)
