OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT :

Designing of Wireless Pulse Rate Meter

Heart rate measurement is one of the very important parameters of
the human cardiovascular system
The heart rate of a healthy adult at rest is around 72 beats per
minute (bpm)
Heart rate is simply and traditionally measured by placing the thumb
over the subjects arterial pulsation
The pulses are counted usually for a 30 second period
The pulse rate is obtained by multiplying the above parameter by 2

The device consists of an infrared transmitter LED and an infrared

sensor photo-transistor
The transmitter-sensor pair is clipped on one of the fingers of the
subject
The LED emits infrared light to the finger of the
subject
The photo-transistor detects this light beam
and measures the change of blood volume
through the finger artery

PROBLEMS THAT MAY ARISE

For amplification, the opamp used should have high gain

If two opamps are used, dual supply is required
The pulse rate has very low frequency(~1.17Hz for 70 bpm)
The filter circuit to be used must provide required attenuation
To provide lots of attenuation, we can cascade several RC filters
But the impedance of One RC filter affects the other
This means that the knee or transition between the pass and stop
bands wont be very sharp
A sharp knee helps reduce the interfering signal without degrading
the desired signal

AMPLIFICATION:We can use IC LM358 for amplification. It has the

following Advantages:
Two internally compensated op amps
Eliminates need for dual supplies
Allows direct sensing near GND and
VOUT also goes to GND
Compatible with all forms of logic
Power drain suitable for battery operation

FILTER CIRCUIT:The pulse rate has very low frequency(1.17 Hz for 70bpm)
For this purpose we can use SALLEN-KEY Low Pass Filter
We consider R1=R2 and the op amp stage
is a unity gain follower (RB=short and RA=open).
Designing a 2-pole Butterworth filter
requires just a few steps.
1. Choose a cutoff frequency fo (Hz).
2. Pick a convenient cap value C2 between 100pF and 0.1 uF.
3. Make C1 = 2 x C2
4. Calculate R1 = R2 = 0.707 / (2 fo C2)

MICROCONTROLLER:

The microcontroller counts the number of pulses over a fixed time

interval
We can use 8051 microcontroller for this purpose
3 readings of the heart beat can be taken
The average of the 3 readings will give the final pulse rate
Calculated heart rate is displayed on an LCD in beats-per-minute in
the following format:
Rate = nnn bpm
Where nnn is an integer between 1 and 999

CONCLUSION:

This is the idea that we have conceived so far

We have not yet started working on our project
We are looking forward to make a successful and commercially
viable wireless pulse rate meter
