BLAST

RESISTANT
CONCRET
E

INTRODUCTION:
We know that concrete is the most widely used

manufactured material on our planet.

In todays world we have witnessed the loss of lives
due to effect of terrorist attacks against our
concrete structures.
So a new type of concrete called Blast Resistant
Concrete has been developed to overcome this type
of limitations of concrete.
Blast resistant concrete is developed with chopped
synthetic fibers treated by a proprietary process
that permits fibers to be added to concrete mixed in
commercial equipment.

WHY WE USE FIBERS IN

CONCRETE:
Adding fibers to concrete improves

mechanical properties:
Increases toughness.
Increases ductility and flexural resistance.
Gets higher and more stable tensile strength.
Increases shear resistance.
And can improve control for the following
effects:
Impact.
Shrinkage.
Fire resistance.

Blast Resistant Concrete has been

made of two different types of
concretes:
Either Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete

(CFRC)
Or Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced

Concrete (UHPFRC)

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete:

Today short carbon fibers - measuring not

more than 1.5 inches - are found in buildings,

bridges and slabs to limit the size of cracks.
But for CFRC we use up to 6 inches in length,
significantly improving a structure's ability to
withstand blasts, hurricanes and other natural
disasters.
Due to the greater length of these fibers
structural properties and spalling resistance is
also greatly enhanced.

Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced

Concrete:

UHPFRC is a concrete which is been obtained

from the development of High Performance

Fiber Reinforced Concrete.
The UHPFRC resisted the high explosion blast
without any disintegration from the back of
the panels causing shrapnel.
UHPFRC is different because needle-thin steel
fibers are added into the concrete mix instead
of steel reinforcing bars to increase its tensile
strength.

The following table shows the

difference between the conventional
concrete and blast resistant
concrete (according to tests

What makes UHPFRC a suitable material

for use in anti-terrorism applications.
UHPFRC is a new type of material that combines a very

strong and dense cementicious matrix with very high fiber

content.
It has a very high compressive strength of 200MPa and a
relatively large tensile strength of 10MPa.
This UHPFRC can absorb about 1000 times more energy
than standard concrete.
It has enhanced tension and compressive strength of 500%
greater than conventional concrete.
It is especially designed to employ large dynamic bending
capabilities meaning that its likely to produce shrapnel.
Its bending strength and capacity to absorb energy is
more.

Failures
and Advices
Longer carbon fibers are more likely to ball up as the concrete is mixed

APPLICATIONS

Military, other Government, commercial & industrial construction applic

CONCLUSION
The potential of this Blast resistant concrete is

great.
This concrete has very special properties
which can revolutionize the construction
industry offering lighter-weight, safer and
stronger buildings.
Most importantly it will SAVE LIVES.
