It is an OS based on LINUX KERNEL .

Initially developed by ANDY RUBIN, RICH


MILNER, NICK SEARS & CHRIS WHITE of
Android,Inc. backed by Google.

unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of


theOpen Handset Alliance.

The first publicly available smartphone


running Android, theHTC Dream, was released
on October 22, 2008.

Then came NEXUS series released under


Google.

On 13th Mar 2013, Sundar Pichai took over


ANDRIOD.

Since 2008, Android has seennumerous


updateswhich have incrementally improved
the operating system with its upgrades.

Alpha, Beta, (cant be remembered)

Cupcake, Donut, Eclairs. (yummyyyy)

recommend at least 512MBof RAM, & require
32-bitARMv7,MIPSorx86architecture
processor.

Software Stack:

Hardware and Android has always been at


odds.

Each new update is specifically tailored to


he device.

Vanilla source code on Googles Nexus.


Others has to provide a binary image
specific.

Coz of this, a lot of devices remain older,


clunkier version of OS.

Albeit is not the first Smartphone OS to hit


the market.

Originally presented as OS X for iPhone


when released in 2007.

iOS

In June 2010, Apple rebranded iPhone OS as


"iOS.

Apple provides major updates to the iOS


operating system approximately once a
year overiTunesand also, since iOS version
5.0,over the air.

The latest version is iOS 7.1 available for


almost all latest Apple products.

Homescreen known as SPRINGBOARD


displaysapplicationicons and a dock most
used apps on the bottom of the screen.

The screen's background can be customized


with other customizations available through
jailbreaking.

Since iOS version 3.0, aSpotlightSearch


function has been available on the leftmost
page of the home screen page.

Introduction of JIGGLE MODE.

Notifications:

Delivered in blue dialog box before iOS 05.


(highly criticised).

In iOS 05, Notifications collate n a window


which can be dragged down.

Now, they appear in a small banners over the


status bar.

Old methods are still available at users option

Apps:
"iMessage" is available on all iOS devices
running iOS 5 or above.
Photo Booth: A camera application with
added special effects.
Panoramic photography: available only on
iPhone 4S & later models & V gen iPod
Touch.
Passbook:A virtual wallet application for
passes, tickets, coupons and loyalty cards.
Newsstand: A newspaper and magazine
store.

Apps:
Touch ID: Afingerprint recognitionfeature
built into the home button.
Nike + iPod: Records the distance and pace
of a walk or run, (connect to Nike + iPod
sensor)
Maps: Google MapswithGoogle Street View

SIRI: Siri is a personal assistant and


knowledge navigator which works as an
application on supported devices, (iOS7 &
>4S)

Game center:
Game Center is anonlinemultiplayer"social
gaming network.
Invite friends to play a game, start a
multiplayer game.

Released on Sept 8, 2010 with iOS 4.1 on


iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4.

Game Center is unofficially available on the


iPhone 3G via a hack.

Steve Jobs announced that a


software development kit(SDK) would be made
available to third-party developers in February
2008.

SDK was released on March 6, 2008, and allows


developers to make applications for the iPhone
and iPod Touch, (pay iPhone Developer Program
fee,)

As of July 20, 2011, Apple releasedXcodeon its


Mac App Store free to download for allOS X Lion
users, instead of as a standalone download.

iOS apps are written in Objective-C.
