Metro Polaris: Proposed

Earthquake Resistant
Shopping Mall

Background of the Study

Paranaque City is becoming the countrys top tourist and

entertainment destination with the continued development
of numerous world class hotel resorts and leisure
destinations that have moved in the entertainment city.
However theres a big risk in developing in Paranaque City
due to the Marikina valley fault line and the type of soil in
the area. As a place where local and foreign tourist is going
in and out, it must provide a complex where they can dine,
buy the things that they need, have their recreation and to
stay for hours that is cost-effective. A shopping mall not just
for lifestyle and leisure but must have the design and
development that can withstand earthquakes and serves as
a centre where people can be safe if it happen.

Problem Statement

In the Philippines, malls become prevalent because of the

lifestyle of the residents living in a particular area. Malls
became the primary get a way place to take a break and
relax with the activities as well as the events present
inside the mall. The concern for the safety of the people
must be in their top priorities; of constructing a building
that can withstand an earthquake can help in creating a
place where people can be safe and a large, crowded,
shopping mall represents a significant potential for loss of
life when an earthquake strikes. It therefore requires the
highest standards of management to ensure that risks are
anticipated and covered by the best possible systems for
life safety and property protection.

Objectives
To design in an area promoting lifestyle and leisure
To design a shopping mall with good visual profiles and
aesthetic appeal
To know the safety measures needed to be considered in
building a shopping mall
To assess the need of the structure to consider as an
earthquake resistant structure
To design a shopping mall that can withstand earth shocks
and associated erratic ground motion.

Why proposed a mall and why it

must be earthquake resistant?

Why mall is important?

MALL
Lifestyle and Leisure*
Can create job opportunities
Indispensable servant of the community
Related Fact:
Ayala Land Incorporated confirmed that it
plans to start developing a 9 ha. Mixed use
complex in Paranaque City that will be bigger
than the mall of Asia complex.

Site/Development selection Criteria

Based on the areas natural, environmental
and physical factors
Most areas of the site have stable soil and mostly
consist of new cohesive soils like
hard clays, gravel and sand.
Accessible through private vehicles.
Lot size is adequate to meet lot size requirement
and provides area for another
expansion or provision of another adjacent
amenities and activities.
Site has both excellent solar and wind
orientation.
The site has no existing vegetation

Socio-economic and cultural factors

Site is potential for local and international
business sectors and agencies, tourism
development and job opportunities.
Accessible to main road
Site is within highly developed urbanized area
Land is within a C-3 zoning classification set
in the national building Code or within
Central Business District
Perfectly relates with the adjacent land use
and surrounding context

Why it must be earthquake

resistant?
Whats within the
location of the site?

According to PHIVOLCS,
the valley fault line that
will pass thru the affected
municipalities and cities,
including Paranaque, is
already overdue for its
movement.

The soil classification of

Paranaque is Guadalupe
soil that is a volcanic
eject that produces a
loam to clay loam
texture that can hold
more water.

If the earthquake happen the

estimated magnitude can reach up to
7.2 with casualties predicted as high
as 35,000, injuries of 12,000 and 3
million people needs to be evacuated

The area is prone to liquefaction.

Liquefaction is a Big Dilemma

The site of the project is within the
premise of a reclamation area

Earthquake Resistant
Design
Countermeasures that can minimize
uneven settlement when liquefaction occur

Cast pile foundation to an adequate

Depth below the liquefied ground
*adopt a mat foundation that
suppresses uneven settlement
*install jacks below the foundation
In advance
