Another Way to Understand the Engineering

Design Process
NGSS Engineering at JPL: Introduction

By the end of 12th grade, all students will:

-Have some appreciation of the beauty and wonder of science;

-Possess sufficient knowledge of science and engineering to engage in

public discussions on related issues;
be careful consumers of scientific and technological information
related to their everyday lives;
be able to continue to learn about science outside school;
have the skills to enter careers of their choice, including (but not
limited to) careers in science, engineering, and technology
-adapted from A Framework for K-12 Science Education (2012)

1. Why should Rosie keep trying to make the cheese-copter?

1. What gift did Rosie receive from her aunt?

1. What changed Rosies attitude about being an engineer?

Pretend you are Rosie Revere, Engineer. Here is your task:

20 spaghetti noodles
marshmallow

1 meter tape

1 meter string

The Rules
Using only the items in this bag, build the TALLEST structure you can!
Some rules:
You have 18 minutes, then its hands off!
You can break the spaghetti, tape, string however you want.
You dont have to use all the materials
Your goal is to construct the tallest free-standing structure
measured from table to marshmallow. So the marshmallow goes
on top!
No eating the marshmallow!
After 18 minutes well measure each teams tower height.

Some questions to think about:

How did your team do?

What decisions did you make to build your
tower?

Which steps of the engineering design

process did your team do?

What would you do differently if you had

another chance?
If you could have one more item in your bag,
what would you choose?

Now, using the same

materials, build an
animal with a
marshmallow head

Planning time

with your cohort to
