Design Situation
With the amount of accidents that happen on the roads in Britain each year, it is important to always
be ready for the unexpected as there are thousands of accidents, fatal and non-fatal each year.
Although car travel safety kits have already on the market, they often cause storage issues and can
make it harder for the public when it comes to simple tasks like shopping etc. or going on holiday as
they can often take up a lot of space in the boot of the car. In 2012, there was reports of over 1700
deaths due to road accidents.
Design Brief
I have been asked by a client to create a car emergency travel kit that can be placed in the back of
the car that takes up little space for the user and will not create a storage issue. I have also been
asked to create this kit with all of the essential items that you will need in any type of life emergency
whether it be a car breakdown, some being injured or a fire etc. I will then sell this product to the
client to be sold onto the public. My client for my project will be the RAC.
Initial Specification Points
The product needs to take up little space in the motor vehicle and not create a storage problem.
The product must have/be able to hold all of the essential equipment that would be required in
any type of emergency.
The product must come at an affordable price so a lot of the public can afford it.
The product must be user friendly and safe to use as a lot of the equipment could be seen as
dangerous.
The product must come as one item such as bag or box to save space and so that everything is
kept together and secure in one location.
The product must be portable and easy to carry for the user.
This slide is my
situation and brief.
This will give me a
basic insight into
the product I am
creating and some
basic information. I
have also created
some initial
specification points

me an idea of how
Client Profile
Age: The target audience for my product will be
between age of thirty and fifty.
Gender: There is no target gender that this
particular product will be aimed at. This is
because almost all men and women drive and
can be a use to both.
Family: Husband and children. This is because
more of these types of products are sold to this
market.
Jobs: A far away job that requires a lot of
travelling using a car.
Income: 28,00 minimum per annum.
Car: Hyundai i10
Hobbies: Shopping, going out with family and
friends, travelling and going on holidays.
Home: A three bedroom private terraced house
Shops at: IKEA, Debenhams, RAC/Halfords,
Wilkinsons
Lifestyle: Decent income, likes to have modern
and innovative house with new and exciting
items. Interested with eating healthily and having
a good wellbeing.
Interior Style: Post modernist, a mix of modern
and traditional looking furniture.
This is my client profile and mood board. The importance of
this page is that it gives me a basic idea and insight into the
type of consumer that will be purchasing my product. A client
is different from a consumer as the client is the person I will be
talking to about my product whereas the consumer is the
person who buys the product. I will then use this to go further
into detail about what the user wants from my product.

This is the winner I have chosen for the CAFEQUE. I have chosen this for several different reasons. These
include that it is the cheapest of all of the products and also one of the most effective, best looking and user
friendly products. Unlike two of the other products, this is very user friendly. For example, it has a handle so
that the user can hold it easily and safely. It is also very suitable for the environment as a car as it is square so
that it will not fall over and also meets the theme of a car boot as most car boots are black allowing the yellow
to be seen much easier if needed in an emergency. This also has different equipment in that isnt in normal kits
making it more effective. This is because it is specifically tailored for winter which I think it is positive because
it does not have only the essential safety items but items specifically suited to problems that occur during the
winter. As the product is made from AA, the product is also very good quality. This include the actual bag with
everything in and also the actual components. Overall, this is the product I have chosen as my favourite

This graph shows that 92% of the
target market own a car or motor
vehicle. This is a good thing as this
means that my product will attract a
much wider audience as only 8% dont
actually own a car. This also means that
I will have to design my product to fit

Wood is split up into two main different groups. These groups are hardwoods and softwoods. Hardwoods come from deciduous trees
and grow over a very long time. Hardwoods are often used for furniture as they are much stronger than softwoods so they can be
used for items such as indoor tables, chairs and flooring etc. This is because it has a very good strength to weight ratio so it can hold
a lot compared to its weight.it also has a naturally aesthetically pleasing grain to the material. This makes it ideal in the home. Some
hardwoods include; Oak, Beech, Teak, Walnut, Ash and Yew. The other type of wood is softwoods. Softwoods grow much quicker and
the trees that they grow on are known as evergreen trees. Softwoods can be used for furniture as well but usually are made into
manufactured boards rather than pure softwoods. Some softwoods can include; Scott's pine, spruce, Douglas fir etc. There are also
different manufactured boards, some of these include; plywood, medium density fibreboard, block board or chipboard. Although,
there are many other different types of manufactured boards. These often have many different purposes, although they are mainly
used in inside furniture as they can be crafted much cheaper than the use of hardwoods and softwoods as they are used from
softwoods and sometimes, the bits leftover from the making of and crafting of other products. Woods are often much stronger than
plastics or metals as they are very non-ferrous

require high skilled workers as they cannot be machine worked. Paper can be split up into many
different sections such as card, paper and board. These products and material types can range from
carton board which is used in food products to cardboard which is mostly used for packaging and we
come to know almost every day. Paper and board can often be cheap however due to the strength of
the material, it is usually only used for products such as models and prototypes and sometimes
testing.
On this slide, I have talked about many different
materials and how they could possibly help me in the
creation of my product. I will also use and refer to this
page when creating my specification and other pages
such as my component material page. This is very
important as I ca use this for my source of information
rather than using the internet or book for example. I
have included some detail but I have also put all of the
basic information in that I would need to know during
the rest of my project.

Specification Point
Function
The product must contain all equipment
needed to suit the needs of any
emergency that the use will encounter on
the road. The equipment that the kit will
contain includes; a fire extinguisher, first
aid kit, warning triangle, high visibility
jacket and finally jump leads.
The kit must be easily accessible during an
emergency. For example, if there is a car
crash the kit must be easily accessible for
the user to grab, therefore meaning the kit
must be lightweight and not take up too
much room in the car.
The kit must be sturdy and therefore not
roll in the back of the car with other items
such as shopping etc. It must also be
sturdy to not damage the actual boot.
Ergonomics
The kit must have a handle/strap to be
able for the user to lift it or transport it
with ease. This is because it will be much
more use friendly if the user can remove
the entire kit using a handle.
The product must be safe for the user to
handle. This means that there must be not
sharp edges to the outside of the product
or any parts to the product which could
harm the user without intending to.
The product must be easy to remove the
products from. This means that the items
must be easy to take out. For example, the
compartments must be easy to take apart
in the case of an emergency.
Why is it important?

Specification Point
Materials
The materials for the product must be
strong enough to hold all of the materials.
This is to make it safe for the user to keep
inside their car.
The materials that I use for the product
must be lightweight enough for the user to
lift easily in the case of an emergency. Also
it needs to be lightweight before adding
the equipment into the product.
The materials selected must be
aesthetically pleasing. Examples of this
could be a material where a finish can be
applied or dyed in manufacture.
Aesthetics
The product must be easily seen by the
user via a reflective strip or a finish that is
applied to the product so that it can seen
in the dark.
The product will need to have an
innovative and creative shape. This is
because my brief tells me so and because
my client prefers a creative design.
The product must be aesthetically
pleasing. This could be done by the
colours used in the product or the theme
which is used throughout.
Scale of Production
My product will be mass produced and
then sold through my client through the
internet and in store where applicable.
Why is it important?

This design is a
developed design of
the previous design. I
have looked at ways
of the kit being held

have looked at
different ways of
shutting the kit such
as Velcro or telescopic

the previous design, I
have looked at ways
of having the fire

differently such as a

This design is a
development of my
previous as I have used
the triangular shape
and the idea of holding
the warning triangle on
the outside of the
product. On this design
I started looking at two
triangles, one slotting
inside the other and
acting as a frame
holding all the items on
the outside. There will
then be a hole on the
outside piece allowing
the user to remove
them with ease. I then
looked at methods of
putting a handle to
remove the inner
triangle easier. This is
good as it is very user
friendly. I think that the
strengths of this
product are that it is
very user friendly as it
is designed for the user
to just remove items
from the outside and
there is a handle to hold
the entire product.
However, the
drawbacks are that the
equipment could
possibly get damaged
in the back of the car if
there are other personal
items there.. I then
moved onto the idea of
items being sandwiched
between two products.
The equipment will be
connected by clips so
they can just be
removed. I have looked
into how the clips will
be connected. I have
also come up with a
design that the warning
triangle will fit onto the

Components
Required
Characteristics
Strong: The handle and lock must
be strong for the user to hold and
for the clip to hold in place when
shut
Safe: The material must also be
safe and smooth so that the user
will not get harmed when using
the product.
Strength to weight ratio: The
strength of the material must be
more than the weight of the
product sitting onto of it or any
added weight added to the overall
product.
Aesthetics: The product must look
aesthetically pleasing to the user
as it will be in their car. The
product must also display some
sort of high visibility strip so that
it can be seen in the dark and in
an emergency.
Durable: This is the outside of the
product so it must be durable and
last a certain time as it will need
to hold everything.
Lightweight: The product will need
to be lightweight as the user will
need to lift it in an emergency.
This then means that the product
needs to be more user friendly.
This is because it might need to
be transported during an
emergency.
Materials Considered
Aluminium
Steel
Plywood
Acrylic
MDF
Polyethylene terephthalate
Polypropylene
Reasons for
Consideration
Aluminium is cheaper than steel,
however they are not as strong.
Where the product lacks in
strength it makes up weight. This
is because the material is very
lightweight making it very user
friendly.
Steel is a very strong material
however it can be very heavy and
can rust if it is put in the rain for
example. It would be good as the
user will be able to hold the
product in a very secure and safe
way.
Plywood is a very viable material
as it is lightweight and also very
strong and durable so it will last
the products life cycle. A finish
can also be applied to make it
aesthetically pleasing.
Acrylic can be relatively cheap
and can be cut to a certain size
using the laser cutter so complex
shapes can be cut out. It can also
come in different colours.
MDF is very strong and durable so
it can be used for the main
product as it will last a long time.
However the material can be quite
heavy and therefore not user
friendly.
PET is a very lightweight a flexible
material, making it very ideal for
the purpose. Although, it is
lightweight, PET is not very strong
and could be easily broken if
enough pressure is applied to it.
Polypropylene is a very ideal
material as it is very lightweight
and very flexible however it also
has a much higher strength
compared to PET so it will be able
to hold the fire extinguisher in.
Plywood
I have chosen plywood as my final
choice as it has all of the
characteristics I will need for the
component. A finish can be
applied such as sanding or paint
to make it aesthetically pleasing.
The nature of plywood makes it a
very strong material as it is
formed via layers. This is ideal as
it will need to hold all of the
materials inside. I will also need it
to hold the fire extinguisher on
the exterior of the product.
Compared to other woods,
plywood is lightweight so it is
ideal for the user as not as much
effort will be needed to move or
transport the material.
Polypropylene
I have chosen polypropylene for
my chosen material because it
meets all of the characteristics
that I need for my component.
Polypropylene can also be dyed so
it can meet the theme of the rest
of the product. By using
polypropylene, it will also not
damage the finish applied on the
product or the actual fire
extinguisher. It can be injection
moulded also so I can use holes to
screw it to the product.
26
27
I started off by setting up a page that is size 600mm x 300mm. I have selected this size because it is the size
of the laser cutter that I will be using to cut out of. I have also changed the layout of my page by adding a grid.
I have spaced the gridlines 2.5mm apart and have selected to show and snap to grid. This will help me when
using vector tools. I have also the transformation dockers which will help me as I can change the size or ration
for example of any vector that I select.
I then used the box shape vector tool to create a square box that is
the size 210mm x 210mm. I got this size from measuring the inside
triangle on the kit. I made sure that when measuring that I made
the box smaller than the actual length so that it would leave a
wooden flange visible.
I used the line vector tool to draw a line from the centre point of
the top of the square to the bottom right corner. I then repeated
this to the bottom left corner giving me a triangle shape. I then
used the dimension tool to measure from one point to another to
check that the measurements were right. This is where I changed
the size so that the size would be 200mm making it just smaller
than the size on the actual kit.
I then grabbed the RAC logo from the internet and saved it to my
area. I then imported into that document and changed it into a
drawing. I dont this by selecting it and clicking edit bitmap which
let me just have the outline. I then changed the outline to black
and give it no fill. This means that when I put it in the laser cutter,
it will cut where the outline is.
I put the new RAC logo onto the triangle and changed the design by
adding shapes and text to make it more aesthetically pleasing as
shown to the left. I ended up by just adding the RAC logo into the
middle and making it much simpler but more attractive to look at.
The last thing I did was to add a triangle into the middle and cut
them out of red and white acrylic plastic and then fit them into
each other onto the front of the kit.

The product must contain all equipment needed to suit the needs of any emergency that the use will encounter on the road. The
equipment that the kit will contain includes; a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, warning triangle, high visibility jacket and finally jump
leads.
My product has met this specification point as all of the equipment is inside the kit to that the user will be ready for any type of
emergency. The first aid kit, high visibility jacket and jump leads are being held inside the kit whereas the warning triangle and fire
extinguisher are on the exterior of the product.
The kit must be easily accessible during an emergency. For example, if there is a car crash the kit must be easily accessible for the
user to grab, therefore meaning the kit must be lightweight and not take up too much room in the car.
I have met this specification as I have included a sturdy handle onto the product. This makes it easy for the user to just pick up easily
making it user friendly. I also have a clip so that it is very easy to access the inside of the kit if needed in the case of an emergency.
The kit must be sturdy and therefore not roll in the back of the car with other items such as shopping etc. It must also be sturdy to
not damage the actual boot.
This specification point has been met as the kit stands on its side. The shape of the product is also triangular and flat meaning that it
will not roll about. I have made sure that the product can easily stand on its side without worry of it falling onto personal items etc.
Ergonomics
The kit must have a handle/strap to be able for the user to lift it or transport it with ease. This is because it will be much more use
friendly if the user can remove the entire kit using a handle.
When in the design process of my design, I have made sure include some sort of handle/strap to make sure that it is user friendly. I
have met this point as the one side of the kit has a handle that is comfortable to hold making it ergonomic and user friendly.
The product must be safe for the user to handle. This means that there must be not sharp edges to the outside of the product or any
parts to the product which could harm the user without intending to.
I have met this specification point as I have made sure that there are no sharp edges or components as part of the product. I have
done this by sanding down all of the wood on the surface and the edges giving it a smooth feel. I also checked that all of the
equipment was safe to use.
The product must be easy to remove the products from. This means that the items must be easy to take out. For example, the
compartments must be easy to take apart in the case of an emergency.
One of the main design features of my product is how easy it is to remove items from the kit. I have included a fire extinguisher on
the outside of the product. This is because a fire extinguisher is one of the items that would be needed most urgently. I have also
designed my product so that the warning triangle sits on the outside making it very simple for the user to remove it from the product.
All other equipment is inside with a very easy clip to remove.

Materials
The materials for the product must be strong enough to hold all of the materials. This is to make it safe for the user to keep inside
their car.
I have met the specification point as the base material I have used for my product is plywood. This is a very strong material as it is
made up of many different veneers. By using this material, it is strong enough to hold all of the materials, equipment and
components together into one kit.
The materials that I use for the product must be lightweight enough for the user to lift easily in the case of an emergency. Also it
needs to be lightweight before adding the equipment into the product.
I have tested the product by having numerous individuals use my product including lifting the product. I have manufactured my
product so that it is easy for the user to lift the kit out of a car.
The materials selected must be aesthetically pleasing. Examples of this could be a material where a finish can be applied or dyed in
manufacture.
I have chosen to make my product out of timber. This means that I can apply a very nice finish the product. I applied Danish oil to my
product giving it a shine and therefore making it aesthetically pleasing. I have also used a silver shine aluminium with my product to
separate it from the wood and make the product look more post modern. This means I have met this specification point
Aesthetics
The product must be easily seen by the user via a reflective strip or a finish that is applied to the product so that it can seen in the
dark.
My product does not contain any reflective materials however I have designed the product so that the warning triangle will sit on the
front of the product. This makes the product so that it can be seen in the dark by the user and therefore meeting this specification
point.
The product will need to have an innovative and creative shape. This is because my brief tells me so and because my client prefers a
creative design.
During the design process, I came up with many different designs with different shapes. I have chosen this design because of the
innovative shape of a triangle. I also found from my existing products research that not many kits exist which are triangular and often
square or rectangular making my product very aesthetically pleasing and therefore meeting this specification point.
The product must be aesthetically pleasing. This could be done by the colours used in the product or the theme which is used
throughout.
In the manufacture of my product, I mainly used red and black to give the theme of warning making it eye catching to the user. I
have used a logo on the front of my product which meets the red and black of the warning triangle and fire extinguisher. I have also
used a innovative shape for my product making it more eye catching. This tells me that I have met this specification point.

Strengths of My Product
I think that my product is very good for many different reasons. My product has met all of the specification points that I have given
myself. Some of these include; The product must contain all equipment needed to suit the needs of any emergency that the use will
encounter on the road. The equipment that the kit will contain includes; a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, warning triangle, high
visibility jacket and finally jump leads and The kit must have a handle/strap to be able for the user to lift it or transport it with ease.
This is because it will be much more use friendly if the user can remove the entire kit using a handle. One of the main features of my
product is that it is user friendly. This is because of how easy it is to grab and access/use the kit. I have added a handle to make it
much easier to lift and a clip so that it will stay shut when needed but is just as easy to open if under pressure. The products are
separated making it very easy to get what you want rather to searching round through the bottom of a box to find what you
want/need. I have also designed the product so that it can stand up making it very easy to place in the back of a car or in the boot of
a car during transit. Due to the shape of the product, it is very hard for it to tip over onto the road for example or damage anything
inside the back of a car. I have made a divider inside the kit for the user to easily grab what they want. I have also made it removable
in case the user will need the box as a storage device to store personal goods in. An example of this could be that the user needs
something kept safe and will not roll about in the back of a car. It will also make the job of carrying the items easier. I have also made
the product very safe so that there are no sharp edges or equipment that could harm or damage anything. To do this I have gone
over the product thoroughly sanding down all of the sides. I then went over the product with Danish oil to give it a shine and a
smooth surface. I also took care to choose all of the equipment went so that it could not harm children, the user or damage any
items in the boot of a car. My product also holds of the equipment that was mentioned in the specification. I have spoken to my client
and the target market to come up with a list of items to include within my specification. I then designed my product to hold this
equipment. I designed my product in a clever way so I can the most of the space but still make the product look aesthetically
pleasing. Due to the finish I have applied along with the mix of materials I have used, my product looks very innovative and modern
making it the sort of design that my client and target market will want. I have also followed a red and black theme making the
product very eye catching to the audience.
35
Weaknesses of My Product
One of the main weaknesses to my product is getting it all back into the kit. I have made it so that it is easy to take out in case of an
emergency, however it is not as easy to put all of the equipment back into place. An example of this is the jump leads. They are
snuggly fit into the right side of my kit however when they are taken out, it is very hard to put it back into the kit without damaging
the leads or the wood. The jacket and first aid kit can too sometimes be a struggle to put back into place. It can be quite a heavy
product after carrying it over long distances making it not ideal for the user to carry over a long period of time. This does not matter
lifting it from the car to the road however carrying through a shop could be a struggle. The handle can be hard to hold due to the
narrow gap and being close to the product unless you have smaller hands.
What Would I Change if I Could Redo My Project?
If I was to redo my project, I would create a tube inside the right hand part of the kit to wrap the jump leads around to make putting
the product away much easier for the user. It could also be some sort of cable management just to make it more user friendly. I
would also make the wood that the handle is attached to bigger as it is close to the product and can make people with big hands
hard to hold. To change this, I would double up on the wood or use a thicker piece so the gap to hold it is not tight.
Consideration of Industrial Process
During my last client interview, we discussed how and on what scale the product will be produced on. We have also looked at ways of
the product being manufactured. As this product is constructed by joining methods such as adhesives, it will be hard for the product
to be machine worked meaning that the price of the product will cost more due to labour costs. However, the wooden and plastic
components can be machine made making it more cost effective. These will be constructed via saws and moulding machines.
36
Time Management
Throughout my project, I gave myself a time plan of what to do and when to do everything over 20 weeks. I think that throughout my
project I stuck to this very well. I have stuck to everything I needed to including all of the deadlines that I have set myself. Anything
that I was behind on throughout the project, I met and caught up with.
Client
I decided to have another interview with my client from RAC. We discussed the product and the cost and on what scale it will be
made. I have also met all of the requirements that the client has set me such as specifications and what he wants from the product.
What Went Well?
There was a lot of things that went well throughout my project. I have met all of my deadlines that I have set myself as well as
meeting any deadlines my teacher had set me. I met all of the specification points and goals that I gave myself to complete.
Throughout my project, I also improved on many different skills such as ICT, drawing and skills relating to different equipment and
machinery in the workshop. These are then skills I will take on in my future.
What Would You Change?
If I was to start my project again, I would reference as I went along rather than trying to find the original link at the very end of the
project as it would save me time. At the end of my project.
Health and Safety
During my project, I learnt about different machinery and tools, this meant that I had to learn the health and safety rules within a
workshop and in an ICT suite. I took care when using any machinery and tools and followed the basic rules such as tucking in my tie
and making sure I have no loose clothes or hair as well as checking my shoes were tied.
Referencing
Whenever I gained information or an image from a source, I referenced it with the original source link/name and mentioned whether
the information was copyright and whether the source was reliable.
