INTRODUCTION :INVERTERS are circuits that converts dc input voltage to a symmetric ac

output voltage by which both magnitude and frequency can be controlled
[The nomenclature inverter is sometimes also used for ac to dc converter
circuits if the power flow direction is from dc to ac side.
However in this lesson, irrespective of power flow direction, inverter is
referred as a circuit that operates from a stiff dc source and generates ac
output.
If the input dc is a voltage source, the inverter is called a voltage source
inverter (VSI).
One can similarly think of a current source inverter (CSI), where the input to
the circuit is a current source.

VOLTAGE SOURCE INVERTER (VSI):

THE VOLTAGE SOURCE INVERTER topology uses a diode rectifier
that converts utility/line AC voltage (60 Hz) to DC.
The converter is not controlled through electronic firing like the CSI
drive.
The DC link is parallel capacitors, which regulate the DC bus voltage
ripple and store energy for the system.

Single-phase voltage source inverter:-

Three-phase voltage source. Inverter:-

CLASSIFICATION
1).VOLTAGE SOURCE INVERTER (VSI) WITH VARIABLE DC LINK :-

DC link voltage is varied by a DC-to DC converter or controlled rectifier. Generate

square wave output voltage.
Output voltage amplitude is varied as DC link is varied.
Frequency of output voltage is :
varied by changing the

frequency of the square

wave pulses.
Advantages: simple waveform generation ,Reliable
Disadvantages: Extra conversion stage ,Poor harmonics

VOLTAGE SOURCE INVERTER (VSI ) WITH FIXED DC LINK:-

DC voltage is held constant.

Output voltage amplitude and frequency are varied simultaneously using PWM
technique.
Good harmonic control, but at the expense of complex waveform generation

APPLICATIONS :
adjustable speed ac motor drives, uninterruptible
power supplies (UPS), and ac appliances run from an automobile battery.
In power systems it is often desired to eliminate harmonic content found in
line currents. VSIs can be used as active power filters to provide this
compensation.

CONCLUSION :

Voltage variations are small in this circuit, but currents can vary wildly with
variations in load, and overcurrent protection is difficult to implement

The frequency of both current and voltage source inverters can be easily
changed by changing the firing pulses on the gates of the SCRs, so both
inverters can be used to drive ac motors at variable speeds
