ABSOLUTE ZERO

DEFECT(AZD)
The emerging concept of a defect free
management system is called an Absolute Zero
Defect.
This is an advance form of Crosby Concept of
Zero Defect (ZD).
Based on a vision of no defect in a total
business process from inside to out side the
organization.
It applies to all sizes and types of organizations
for measuring non-conformities in continuous
quality improvement in all the functions.

 A challenge for practitioners and

industrialists to formulate and
develop strategies & tools to achieve
the ultimate objective of absolute
zero non conformity in each task,
function within and outside the
organization.
This would lead to freezing the
defects at the point of inception,
design stages of products and then
at the development, production and
logistics stages in an organization.

ANALOGY TECHNIQUE - 1
This first analogy is based with a
physical science phenomenon of
absolute temperature.
As temperature of a physical object is
lowered, the motion of electrons
reduces but did not come to complete
rest.
In industry, strict stage inspections
reduces the non conforming products
but reworks, rejections and wastages

 As the temperature is further

reduced , the electrons fall to the
lower energy level. Lowest
temperature is required to cease the
motion of electrons in an atom of a
substance. This is possible at a scale
called Absolute Zero Temperature
which is -273K for water.
Similarly, at absolute zero defects
level, no defective products are
conceived, designed, developed and
produced inside the organization and
no defective products are sent outside

 The concept of AZD focuses on

ceasing the inception, design,
development and production of non
conforming product.

ANALOGY TECHNIQUE - 2
The second analogy is to equate the
quantitative impact of defective
volume produced with the concept of
concentric circles.
One defect on the inter most small
scale represent 10 defects on the
next scale when we zoom it out.

 As the TQM Philosophy of continuous

quality improvement is applied in an
organization, the quantity of
defective products decreases and
resultantly no defective input, no
defective production and no
defective delivery. This is called AZD
datum level.
