Oblique Movement

Other Names
Foci Meter
Lens Meter
Verto Meter

Principle
Lensometer is a AFOCAL Telescope.

Parts of Lens Meter

Eyepiece
Graticule
Lens Stop
Power Drum
Axis Wheel
Illumination Source
Axis, Center Marker

Uses
Locating and marking the lens Optical Center
Orienting the axis of a sphero-cylinder lens
Locating and spotting or marking the
Prism.
Verifying lens add power in bifocals,
trifocals and progressives
Locating areas of lens aberrations

About
The lensmeter is essentially a centered
telescopic optical system aligned with a
standard optical lens and a rotatable
target illuminated by a light source.
It measures the focal length of a lens and
converts it into diopters on a circular
number line called a Power Drum

Working
Lens being

measured is placed against a lens

stop
Lens stop is between telescope and standard
lens.
Target is on other side of the standard lens.
Lens stop is positioned to get its centre at the
anterior focal point of the standard lens.
This ensures the dioptric scale is linear and the
image size of the target is not affected by the

Working
Power of the standard lens is constant between
+22D and +27D.
Maximum plus of the lensometer being slightly
less than the standard lens power.
For +27D, target moves 1.37mm for every dioptre
of vergence.
For +22D, target moves 2.06mm for every dioptre
of vergence.

Working
Power drum is rotated until
the clear image of the target
is seen.
Target is rotated to find the
principle meridian of
cylindrical axis.

Mires

Calibration
Everyday by Trial Lens.

Source of Error
Eye piece focusing
Position of the lens vertex
Wavelength of light (587.6)
Instrumental error

Projection Lensometer
Telescope arrangement is replaced with a
projection device
To overcome the problem of eye-piece.
More than one operator can view the
target at the same time.

Advantages
Not required any subjective judgement
Automatic analysis
Digital display
Several modes (single vision, bifocal,
progressive lenses and contact lenses)
Less time consuming

Geneva Lens Measure

(Spherometer)

Formulae
Radius of curvature
r= (y2+s2)/2s

Working
Simple mechanical instrument used to measure
power and base curve of the spectacle lens.
Base curve measurement which is not possible by
lensometer.
Instrument with three legs, outer two are fixed and
inner one can slide in and out to measure the sag.
Inner leg is attached with spring which exerts small
downward pressure on the surface being measured.

About
Inaccurate readings due to improper leg

position.
Leg position can be verified by placing the

instrument on flat surface, inorder to get

zero value.
Disadvantage: not convenient to measure

in toric surfaces.
