1.0 INTRODUCTION

Dr. Deborah Chung, an expert in composite materials and structural

science at The State University of New York at Buffalo
Composed not only of the basic ingredients of any concrete such as
water, a cement binder, and gravel but also carbon fibers.

These fibers easily conduct electricity and can be used to measure conductivity
across a block of the smart concrete.
Any changes in its resistivity might indicate the presence of minute cracks or
other types of deformation in concrete structures long before they are visible to
the naked eye.
The sensing ability of smart concrete are based on the change of the electrical
resistance.

Has high strength to weight ratio (also

Corrosion resistant and chemically stable.

Very rigid

3.0 PROCEDURE
The mix (mortar) was prepared with : Contain short carbon fibers, typically 5mm in length
Fibers in the amount of 0.5% by weight of cement
Silica fume 15% by weight of cement
Methylcellulose 0.4% by weight of cement
Water-reducing agent TAMOL SN

-Slump of carbon-fiber-reinforced cement

tends to decrease with increasing carbon
fiber content
- To maintain the mortar at a reasonable
flow value in the range of 150 + 50 mm

- As a raw materials
- Added to disperse the fibers
- Silica fume served to
enhance the fiber-matrix
bonding

Cement , sand , silica

fume , methylcellulose
and gravel were mixed for
5 minutes in a mixer

Demolded and subjected to

48 hours of steam curing at
70C
The specimen were cured at
standard temperature of 20
degrees centigrade for 20 hours
after casting

Water added along with

the water reducing agent
and the carbon fibers and
mixing for 1 minute at
low speed

Specimens were dried at

temperature of 50 degrees
centigrade for 7 days.
