1.1 METHODS OF
SELECTION

Hanafi,JKM,PPD,2015

Classical method is more specified,

more global, high cost, required
longer
time
to
complete
the
selection and need to do a prototype
test.
Imitative and Comparison method
are faster and involve low cost,
however they are more suitable for
an experience person or designer.

1.2 MATERIALS IN DESIGN

Design
A process of translating new idea or a
market need into the detailed
information from which a product can
be manufactured.
#How to choose material when designing a
product???

Hanafi,JKM,PPD,2015

The process for the selection

of the material depends on
the stage of the design:
1.

initial design one need to consider wide range of

material
final design - required more accurate information to
choose between a few materials and to make the
final accurate design

-Metal to composites, from 30%-80%, e.g: Fuselage, radome, spoiler, aileron
etc

1.4 SOURCES OF
INFORMATION
An engineer or designer - should have a
sufficient knowledge and information
about materials and their properties.
Standard ASTM (American Society for
Testing & Material), BS (British
Standard), DIN, JIS, MS etc.
Software - CES, NOVA, PERITUS etc.
