ROWES CREATIVE INTELLIGENCE

Chapter 3: Understanding The Creative Individual And
How To Manage Them

A basic premise of Allan Rowes book is

that: everyone has creative potential and
that anyone can discover his/her creative
potential.

The 4 styles of creative intelligence

Intuitive (gerak hati, kata hati)- focuses on results and
relies on past experience to guide actions
Innovative- Concentrates on problem solving, is
systematic, and relies on data
Imaginative- is able to visualize opportunities, is artistic,
enjoys writing and thinks out of the box
Inspirational- Focuses on social change and the giving of
self toward that end.

Intuitive
focuses on results and relies on past
experience to guide actions
E.g. Jack Welch, CEO, General Electric (GE)
Tough but charismatic, hard working and
competitive
Understands that people were the key to running a
successful business; every person had potential.

Innovative
Concentrates on problem solving, is
systematic, and relies on data
Insist on working hard with precise and
careful experiments
E.g. Thomas Edison, Marie Curie
Strong perseverance and self confidence

Imaginative
is able to visualize opportunities, is
artistic, enjoys writing and thinks out
of the box
E.g. Winston Churchill
Demonstrated great courage in times of
crisis

Inspirational
Focuses on social change and the
giving of self toward that end.
E.g. Martin Luther King
Strong oratorical ability

More than 1 style of creative

intelligence
Although each of the people discussed earlier
were strong in one area of creative intelligence,
most of us have more than one creative style.
E.g. Michael Angelo was: innovative (engineer
and scientist), imaginative (artist), and intuitive
(sculptor)
Although we may have more than 1 style, but our
levels of intensity may vary.

Institute of Personality Assessment:Creative

Intelligence (C.I.)vs General Intelligence (G.I.)

Result:
in individuals with IQ >= 120, G.I. was NOT a
significant factor contributing to creativity
Motivation was the key element needed to be
creative this is consistent with the definition
of C.I. , in which personality determines the
drive to accomplish great things.

Jacob Getzels research on creativity

This research helped to re-define G.I.
Conclusion:

IQ tests alone did not accurately predict who was

creative.
Creative students focused on finding the right
problems, not just the right answers

Robert Sternberg (Yale) says: IQ in general plays

LESS of a role in life than do personality,
motivation, experience, social and economic
factors.

The Role of Personality in Creativity

Many factors influence or motivate people to do
things.
Personality appears to be a major driving force
that strongly influences peoples behavior.
Jane Piirto identifies the following personality
attributes that contribute to creativity: being
imaginative, having insight or intuition, being
open and perceptive (mudah mengerti), being
willing to take risks, and having a high
tolerance for ambiguity (samar-samar).

Creative Thinking Traits

Plastic Personality

personality that is basically moulded to suit our

immediate/current needs
adults make deliberate brain changes by reflection, imagining,
thinking, and deciding.
nurture over nature. We nurture the personality we want. i.e
self-nurture or power of thinking. Therefore we can
consciously alter our behaviour and thought patterns
The lion share of adult personality is affected by
environment, life circumstances and early education.
Whatever your genetic heritage can be altered via conscious,
purposeful natural selection. NOTHING IS FIXED FOR LIFE

Attitude and Emotion

Attitude affects a persons creativity
Attitude related creativity more easily
changeable compared to long-term personality
traits.
We can learn to control e.g. via relaxation
techniquesetc

Its a covet process rather than overt.

Attitude reflects a persons motivation

(intrinsic & extrinsic)

What sort of personality is a creative person

likely to have?
What personal traits do they exhibit?
All of us are creative
varies

uniquely human.degree

Innate Creativity
Creativity is a condition of human functioning. We put
together the bits and pieces of our
experience/knowledge to produce extraordinary
insights. i.e. we have a store of knowledge which we
use as a springboard.
All of us have the same basic mental processes (just as
the geniuses)
2 conditions for creativity originality & usefulness
or utility
OUR CREATIVITY IS UNLIMITTED.SO THINK
BIG

Doers and Dreamers

Those who act on their ideas are doers and those who
dont are dreamers (they dont fulfill the usefulness
criterion).
Nevertheless ideas on their own without a tangible
product are still considered of value (e.g. extempore
dance, theres no tangible product).
Creativity is defined in a context/audience. E.g. in a
class, what constitute creativity is basically defined by
those involved.
Creativity is universal, all are blessed.
Growth stifled by left-brain education systems.
