WHAT IS INLAY ?
An

inlay is an intracoronal cast

restoration that is designed to
mainly restore occlusal and proximal
surfaces of posterior teeth without
involving the cusp and rarely
proximal surfaces of anterior teeth.

INDICATIONS
1.L ARGE
.The

RESTORATIONS

cast metal inlay is an alternative to amalgam or composite when

higher strength is needed or when superior control of contour and contact
that indirect procedures provides is desired.
.
Preserving intact facial and lingual enamel is conducive to maintaining the
health of contiguous soft tissues.
2. ENDODONTICALLY

TREATED TEETH

A molar or premolar with endodontic treatment can be restored with cast

metal restoration.

3.

TEETH AT RISK FOR FRACTURE

Fracture lines in enamel and dentin, especially in teeth having extensive

restorations should be recognized as cleavage planes for possible future
fracture of tooth.

4. DENTAL

ALLOY

REHABILLITAION WITH CAST METAL

. When

cast metal restorations have been used to restore adjacent or

opposing teeth, the continued use of same material may consider to
eliminate electrical and corrosive activity that sometimes occurs between
dissimilar metals placed in mouth , particularly when they contact each
other.

5. DIASTEMA

CLOSURE

Used for extension of mesiodistal dimension of tooth is necessary to

form a contact with adjacent tooth.

6. REMOVABLE

PROSTHODONTICS ABUTMENT

Teeth that are to serve as abutment for RPD can be restored with cast
metal restoration.
Major advantages :1.superior physical property. 2.the rest
seat, guiding plane, and other aspects of contour are better controlled
when indirect technique is used.

7. SUBGINGIVAL

LESIONS

CONTRAINDICATIONS
1.
.

2.
.

HIGH CARIES OR PLAQUE INDICES

Smooth surface caries indicates high caries activity

that should be brought under control before
expensive cast metal restoration are used.

DEVELOPING AND DECIDUOUS TEETH

An indirect procedure requires longer and more
numerous appointments , access is more difficult.
They may neglect oral hygiene resulting in
additional caries.

3.
.

4.

OCCLUSAL DISHARMONY

Severe occlusal interference or defects in

stomatognathic system.

SMALL RESTORATIONS

. Because success of amalgam and composite

5.
.

6.

DISSIMILAR METALS

Avoid in patients already having silver

restoration.

ESTHETICS

ADVANTAGES
1.

STRENGTH

2.

BIOCOMPATIBILITY

.The

inherent strength of dental casting alloys

allows them to restore large damaged or missing
areas and be used in ways that protect tooth from
future fracture injury.

.High

gold dental alloys are unreactive in the oral

cavity.
.Helpful for patients who have allergies or
sensitivities to other materials.

LOW WEAR

3.

.Withstand

occlusal loads with minimum changes.

CONTROL OF CONTOURS AND

CONTACT

4.

.Helpful

in large and complex restorations

5.

PRECISE FORM AND MINUTE

DETAILS

6.

LONGEVITY AND ESTHETICS

Not significantly affected by tarnish and

corrosion process in oral cavity.

DISADVANTAGES
1.

NUMBER OF APPOINTMENTS AND

HIGHER CHAIR TIME

.Requires

two or more appointments and time

than direct restoration.

2.

TEMPORARY

.Temporary

restoration between preparation

and delivery appointments occasionally loosen
or break , requiring additional visits.
.cost of material, lab bills , and time involved to
make it.

3.

TECHNIQUE SENSITIVE

.Every

step requires diligence and attention to detail.

.Error at any part of long multistep process tend to be
compounded, resulting in suboptimal results.
4.

SPLITTING FORCES

.Small

inlay may produce wedging effect on facial or

lingual tooth structures and increase potential for
splitting tooth.

5.

LEAKAGE AROUND AND UNDER CAST

RESTORATION

6.

HIGH ABRASIVE RESISTANCE
