thical Dilemma In Movie

How the Rivalry has

been Spread for
Lingesan
In his journey from a bodybuilder to a top model, Lingesan
makes many enemies, including John, whose modelling
career was ruined due to Lingesan's rising popularity,
Osma, who was infatuated by Lingesan and proposed to
him, only to be rejected, industrialist Indrakumar, whose
company suffered losses when Lingesan refused to
endorse their soft drink as it was reported to contain
pesticides; and another bodybuilder Ravi, who also
competed for the Mr. Tamil Nadu title but lost to Lingesan.
These four people conspire to take revenge on Lingesan
and destroy his fame and modelling career.

Is this
right?

Dilemma 1

Professional Rivalry

Description
Competition can enhance ones Quality, also
it has the power to degrade the person.
Professional rivalries often seem like the
ultimate waste of time.
Each and Every person has Competitor in his
or her profession but how he or she deals
with them is an art.
There are two type of mentality we mainly
find in people.one who is always jealous
from their competitor and always think how
to side track them by being a back stabber.
and the another one who believe that they
can glean important lessons from their rivals

Arguments
Jealousy is valid but losing your core values and
qualities wearing a curtain of jealousy over you is an
un ethical thing.
You, being jealous should not destroy another
innocent individuals career that he has made by
working hard and without harming you.

Analysis
According to Kantian ethics theory greatest
good is good will. Kant says do good because
you have a duty to do good, the consequences
are totally irrelevant. Taking revenge is also
against to universal maxim.
According to Kantian ethics theory a person
should respect sportsman-ship and try to work
even harder to gain back the place which he
lost.

Counter Argument
According to Utilitarianism greatest good is maximum number of
happiness.
Ex : Suppose there is a person who becomes so successful in his
profession that he has over shadowed more than many of his peers.
Because of it, those peers loose their current positions. Those
wounded and lost peers would want to stage(take) a revenge.

So can this type of thought process be admired?

If we think of this scenario from the domain of utilitarian ethics
theory than we can obviously say that those peers are right
because this scenario satisfies maximum happiness priority.

Conclusion
The failure would always be victimized by agony and feeling of
revenge.
Why is one spending so much time worrying about what
someone else is doing?
Why doesnt one focus on his or her own business?
Its true that obsessing about a competitor isnt the healthiest
long-term activity.
But Ive also come to believe that you can glean important
lessons from the very act of rivalry if you use it as an
opportunity for growth, rather than just an opportunity to crush
your enemies. So it is good to be Kantian and learn from
others success, and apply it to your methodology of work and
rise again.

IN REAL WORLD ..

Apple vs Samsung
Professional Rivalry

Case Overview
Apple sued Samsung for copying its
product ideas 38-page suit filed by
Apple in the U.S. District Court of
Northern California statesin April 1st,
2011.
Apples Claim
Copied :look, product design,
Packaging
Products:Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, Nexus S
etc.
Counter Claim by Samsung
Samsung also claimed that Apple
infringes on several of its patents
having to do with wireless
communications technology and

Conclusion of This issue

We think that in this type of cases Kantian ethics
must come because according to Kantian ethics to
infringes patents is against the universal maxim.

Dilemma 2

hen your dignity and self-esteem are at s

JOHN CONSTANTLY URGES HER CO-STAR DIYA TO GET

PHYSICALLY INVOLVED WITH HIM. HE FORCES HER AGAINST
HER TO GO AGAINST HER DIGNITY AND SELF-ESTEEM THOUGH
SHE IS VERY PROFESSIONAL ABOUT HER CAREER AND IS NOT
INTERESTED IN HIM AT ALL.

Is this right?

Description

You are dragged into making a decision which would

determine your future with the organization.

Would you be draped in your dignity and reject the offer,

stepping down with your head held high?

Your Decision Depends on the Offer, if the offer

is such that it would benefit millions, then the
utilitarian person would accept without
thinking of his/her dignity and career.
The Kantian person would think that whether
accepting the offer is good and has compliance
with the universal maxim or is violating that.

Arguments
The Utilitarianism theory will not work here.
If you are ready to sacrifice your self esteem and dignity,
either falling prey to someone elses demands or for
your own benefit then it is something which is violating
the universal maxim according to the Kant.

Counterarguments
But if a considerable amount of innocent
people are going to be affected by the decision
you make, then sacrificing your dignity and
career for the benefit of those people is the
ethical thing to do.

IN REAL WORLD ..
Imagine
You have a poor family in Russia
You cant afford your rent, or to feed your young children
A friend of a friend tells you they know someone looking for a
waitress in a neighboring country, and can guarantee you a job
They offer to accompany you in your trip and tell you that in a
short time you will be able to send money back to your family
Would you accept? How many would allow their sisters, wife, or
daughters to go?

LIVING IN FEAR
Sex Trafficking Around the World

WHO ARE THE VICTIMS?

27 Million People are
Enslaved Today-

over twice as many as in the

17 and 18 hundreds
The majority are women
and children
Children as young as 4
Trafficking is a worldwide
business
The average slave costs $90-(factors)

HOW DOES THIS

HAPPEN?
Overseas people are tricked into thinking they are getting work
Exotic dancers are targeted
Street children are often abducted and sold
U.S Tourists can be abducted as well-

Less common, but still

happens
In U.S more sophisticated schemes-

dancing etc

modeling, acting,

THE TRAFFICKERS
75% of the time, the women know the person that sells
them into slavery
Usually an acquaintance, but can also be family members
(Father, Brother, Boyfriend etc)
Trafficker only responsible for girls while in their control,
then they never hear about them again.

WHERE DOES THIS HAPPEN?

ALL OVER THE WORLD, U.S INCLUDED

Massage parlors, tanning salons,
hotels, homes, and warehouses
San Francisco is one of the main
places for trafficking IN THE WORLD
Sacramento on its way!
Costal areas and states that
border Canada/Mexico

WHOSE WILLING TO PAY?

Majority 15-90 yr. old men
Mostly married men
Fathers bring sons to
Show them a good time
Pay more for younger girls,
and clean girls
Once the money is paid
and the door is shut, the
pimp doesnt care what goes on

GOVERNMENT ENABLERS?

Customs officials often paid off for illegal entry of slaves

Blackmailed into cooperating
Low priority for government officials
Costs lots of money to start a raid or open a case
Little punishment for those convicted

AFTER-EFFECTS

When they become worthless to traffickers, women are

thrown out on the streets
Many die while in slavery due to diseases, and drug
overdoses
If they are not on drugs during slavery, many turn to drugs
after the fact
Less than 5% get help after the fact

Conclusion
Here, taking decisions by following
Kantian ethics is definitely more
suitable, because it supports the
Universally accepted fact.

Dilemma 3
Utilitarianism.
Its all about CONSEQUENCES..!!!

MAXIMUM HAPPINESS FOR MAXIMUM PEOPLE

WHAT WOULD HE DO?

When Lingesan becomes more popular in modeling and advertisement

industry, One cold drink company offers him a contract to advertise for
their product but that product contains toxic substances and is very
harmful to people who use it.
So if Lingesan accepts that contract then thousands of his fans will suffer
and if he denies it, he will lose money and may be even his carrier.

QUESTION : Would you turn down an offer which could
be a huge leap forward in your career,
just for the sake of mankind and good
health of the millions?

Arguments
If the person is utilitarian then he would surely care for
the millions and would decline his careers greatest
offer, because this would save the millions of lives.

But if the person follows the Kantian ethics then he

would decline the offer because supporting the wrong
thing is not right according to the universal maxim.

ANALYSIS
According to CLASSICAL Utilitarianism : utility of an
action is defined as the overall balance between
happiness and unhappiness produced by the action.
Benthams version :

Happiness is identified with the pleasure (and the

absence of pain).

Unhappiness is identified with pain (and the

deprivation of pleasure).

In this scenario ,the hero should decline an opportunity

and save the life of millions of people.

From the four major theses of UTILITARIANISM

one is applied here :
Universalism: The consequences to be considered
are those of everyone affected, and everyone equally.
According to UNIVERSAL MAXIM , decline the proposal
and save the lives is good and right thing.
Because here, it is the matter of life and death.

COUNTER ARGUMENTS

The group of enemy decided to inject the virus in heros body

and made his life hell.

Then according to Benthams theory it is morally right thing

because his death did not cause grief to most of people.
BUT ..
Is this right that giving happiness to maximum number of
people by killing an innocent man??

IN REAL WORLD ..
A) You attempt to help an elderly man across the street. He get
across safely.
Conclusion :- the act was a good act.
B) You attempt to help an elderly man across the street. You stumble
as you go , he gets knocked into the path of a car, and is hurt.
Conclusion :- the act was a bad act.

Therefore , UTILITARIANISM THEORY is always depends on the

CONSEQUENCES , and very far to predict the FUTURE !!!

Conclusion
In certain circumstances as discussed on previous slide,
Utilitarianism plays fast and does not take into account the actions
as Gods commandments.

If lying, stealing, or killing could lead to an increase of happiness

for the greatest number, we are told we should lie, steal or kill.
Isnt that a rejection of Gods commands?

SO, we have to think according to QUALITY of happiness rather than

QUANTITY of happiness.
For example, some might find happiness with a pitcher of beer and
a pizza. Others may find happiness watching a fine Shakespearean
play. The quality of happiness is greater with the latter.

Dilemma 4
Loyalty
Loyalty is one of the tools provided by nature to win a

Persons Heart

WHAT WOULD SHE DO?

Progressing
towards the end
of the story
Lingesan
becomes
physically unattractive and
also very much
handicapped
because of the
influenza virus.

Should Diya stay

loyal to her love
which she
thought was
eternal and stay

oyal can you be to a Person loving you m

A person, loves you the most, and has sacrificed his/her life
to bring you up, and now its your turn to return to him/her,
assume that helping him can affect your carrier.

Now assume that the person could be your parents

grandparents, brother/sister, your former lover, your true
friend.

So, the Dilemma in front of you is either do care about carrier

and leave that person into misery or be loyal to that person
and support/help him/her?

Analysis
Loyalty is one of the quality that differentiate mammals from
other animals.
Love, Dedication, kindness from first mammal makes another
mammal loyal to the former.
Selfishness, Misunderstanding, clashes are the hurdles to the
loyalty.

Utilitarians Analysis
A utilitarian person would think about the consequence of
being loyal to the person who sacrificed for you.
He would think that whether being loyal can snatch the
happiness from millions of peoples, e.g.:- if you are doing some
job where millions of peoples are benefited from you, then
utilitarian would continue the job and leave the idea of being
loyal.

Kantians View
A Kantian would be loyal to the person that
loved him so much and dedicated his life to the
former. Because being loyal is his duty to the
latter person for his sacrifice.

IN REAL WORLD ..
Most popular disloyalty cases are abandoning of parents
to old-age homes by their children. Parents sacrifice
their happiness, time, efforts, for their children, and in
return when their child grows up, they find their parents
burden and send them to old-age homes. They even
cant give a small place to their parents to live in their
big house.

Conclusion
Being an Kantian would be beneficial here because Kantian
Philosophy supports duty rather than Consequence unlike
Utilitarianism. Because predicting consequences is complicated
according to Kant.
The person would be true human being if he follows the
Kantian Ethics here.
