5G (5th generation mobile networks or 5th generation
wireless systems) denotes the next major phase of mobile
telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G/IMTAdvanced standards.

In a few years, you may be able to download a full-length HD movie to your phone in a matter of
seconds rather than minutes. And video chats will be so immersive that it will feel like you can
reach out and touch the other person right through the screen.

The ambiguity around 5G is because its still

largely a concept at this point, and the wireless
industry hasnt settled on any standards around
the new network. But its looking to achieve
some key goals with 5G:

Significantly faster data speeds: Currently, 4G networks are

capable of achieving peak download speeds of one gigabit per
second, though in practice its never that fast. With 5G, this
would increase to 10Gbps.

Ultra-low latency: Latency refers to the time it takes

one device to send a packet of data to another device.
Currently with 4G, the latency rate is around 50
milliseconds, but 5G will reduce that to about one
millisecond. This will be particularly important for
industrial applications and driverless cars.
A more connected world: The Internet of Things
(wearables, smart home appliances, connected cars) is
expected to grow exponentially over the next 10 years,
and it will need a network that can accommodate
billions of connected devices. Part of the goal behind 5G
is to provide that capacity, and also to be able to assign
bandwidth depending on the needs of the application
and user.

One of the big challenges facing 5G is

standardization. There are already multiple
groups working to come up with standards
around interoperability, backward
compatibility with older technologies (4G,
3G), and making sure the network will be
future-proof. While many companies agree
that a global standard is needed, whether
theyll be able to come together and agree
on one is another story.

5G is about creating ecosystems and new

revenuestreams. Collaboration is essential if
we are to implement and realize these use
cases.

business model is the

way a business
generates, provides and
retains value. In other
words, how we make
money

The Business Model Canvas, as its name

suggests, is a canvas or scheme in which
we find the nine elements that constitute
any business model. Usually, the canvas is
printed or sketched on a whiteboard and,
then, we use post-its with our
handwritten annotations to fill in the nine
sections, until we completely define our
business model. In this way, we can design
our business model in just some minutes.

The nine elements represented in the Business Model Canvas are

the following:
1. Customer

segments: The different groups of people or

entities that our business aims at, in order to provide
them a service or sell them a product.
2. Value proposition: The set of products or services that
provide value for our customer segments.
3. Channels: The way in which we communicate and target
our customer segments.
4. Customer relationships: They type of relationships a
business establishes with each customer segment.

1. Revenue

streams: The revenue we obtain from

each segment.
2. Key resources: The most important assets that
our business needs to function.
3. Key activities: The most important activities
that we need to carry out so that our business
works.
4. Key partnerships: The suppliers and strategic
partners that our business needs to function.
5. Cost structure: All the costs in which our
business model incurs to operate.
