Geometric Conditions
Presented by: Group 4 (9G E-Math)

Learning Objectives:
To determine what are the geometric

conditions determining Circles

To be able to answer questions in relationship

to the topics to be discussed

To understand the definitions and its function

to the conditions given on Circles

Geometric Conditions
Circle Tangent to a Line
Intersection between the Line and

the Circle
Points of Intersection of Two Circles

Word Vocabulary
Circle Set of points on the plane that are equidistant from a fixed point called the center.
Tangent Line - A line that touches a circle at only one point.

- It is a line perpendicular to the radius of a circle.

Radius - A line segment that determines the distance from the center to any point on

the circle.
- Its plural form is Radii (ray-dee-eye)

Secant A line intersecting a circle at two points.

Word Vocabulary
Center The point around which a circle is described.
Cartesian Coordinate System - a coordinate system that

specifies each point uniquely in a plane by a pair of

numerical coordinates.

CIRCLE TANGENT TO A LINE

CIRCLES DETERMINED BY GEOMETRIC CONDITIONS

Find the equation of a circle if the circle is tangent to the

line x + y + 4 = 0 at the point (3, -1), and the center is on the
line x + 2y 3 = 0.

CIRCLE TANGENT TO A LINE

Example #1

Solution:

Let C(x, y) and radius = r. Line

perpendicular to the line x + y + 4 = 0
through (3, 1) passes through the
center of the circle
Coordinates of the center is the point of
intersection between x + 2y 3 = 0 and
x + y 2 = 0.

Solve for x and y,

Two methods to find the

radius:
Method 1:
Using the directed distance between x + y + 4 = 0 and the
point (1, 1)
Method 2:
Using the distance formula between (3, 1) and (1, 1).

Solution:

Therefore,

Simplifying,

INTERSECTION BETWEEN A LINE AND A CIRCLE

Example #1

Find the points of intersection between the line x = y and

the circle x2 + y2 + 2x 2y = 2. Draw the figure

Solution:

Substitute the equation of the line to

the equation of the circle.

Therefore the points of

intersections are ,

CIRCLES DETERMINED BY GEOMETRIC CONDITIONS

POINTS OF INTERSECTION OF TWO CIRCLES

Example #1

Find the points of intersection of the circles x2 + y2 2x 2y 2 = 0

and x2 + y2 + 2x + 2y 2 = 0. Draw the circles.

Solution:

Subtracting,
Substituting,

Find y if x = 1 and x = -1,

Therefore, the points of intersection

are

POINTS OF INTERSECTION OF TWO CIRCLES

Example #2

Given the equations, x2 + (y - 2) = 10 and (x 2) + y2 = 10, Find the

points of intersection of the circles

Solution:

x2+y24y+4=x24x+4+y2
Combine all like terms,

4x4y=0
Having an answer of,

x=y
Find y if x = y

y=3,1
Therefore, the points of intersection
are,

P1(3,3)P2(1,1)
