Ageism

Definitions

Age stereotype definition- Ageism (also spelled "agism") is

stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups on
the basis of their age. This may be casual or systematic. A
example of this could be a old lady being weak and brittle.
Countertype- This includes the positive aspects of being
stereotyped such as a old lady being caring and calm.

Common Stereotypes- Children

Children are usually stereotyped as:
Kind
Loud
Caring
Annoying
Spoilt
Innocent
Naughty- but act innocent when people find out what they
have done.
Children are stereotyped in the categories above that people
will almost instantly take their side in an argument. For
example, if two brothers had an argument, one aged 5 and
the other 15, the parents will normally take the 5 year olds
side and punish the 15 year old.

Common stereotypes- Teenagers

Teenagers are stereotyped in a variety of ways and get judged the

most out of all of the age groups.
They are stereotyped as:
Violent
Loud
Vandalism
Attitude
Big headed (cocky)
People can make that much of a judgement that they are fearful of teenagers as they
may be violent so they will treat them differently. Teenagers can be treated badly as
there may only be two people allowed in the shop at once as they are stereotyped as
stealing from shops. We are seen to be addicted to social media and technology which is
unfair because some of us play sport, work and do school work which is a unfair
stereotype towards us. We are also seen as lazy as most adults talk about all the work
they did in there days so we are judged as not having a work ethic.

Common stereotypes- Elderly

The elderly are also a common group of people who are stereotyped lots.
They are stereotyped as:
Weak
Brittle
Boring
Caring
Miserable
Elderly people are judged as being weak and tired which results in people taking more care with
them and being more compassionate towards them they are treated gently so there is no harm
done to them when actually some elderly people are perfectly able and can look after themselves
fine.
They can be seen to always have a walking stick or a mobility scooters ads they cannot walk or
have a injury when actually there are lots of old people who participate in sports such as cricket
and can be fitter than some young people. The counter types of old people include them being
caring as they will be gentle and calm but some old people are miserable and only care about
themselves.
