PED 212 Week 1 DQ 1 Current Issue

s
Current Issues. Choose a current issue to research that
can be related to providing quality physical education at
the elementary school level. Some examples of issues
might be childhood obesity, budget constraints, family /
home environment, nutrition, prenatal care, lack of me
dical care or other factors that either offer an advantag
e or disadvantage to a childs motor development. Revie
w several scholarly sources that offer information on th
e issue.

PED 212 Week 1 DQ 2 Critical Thinki

ng
Critical Thinking. In this discussion forum, you will exam
ine your critical thinking, inquiring, and communication
skills as they relate to the subject of physical education.
Questioning compels thinking and, as thinkers, you asse
ss what you read and incorporate knowledge with your
prior understanding of the subject. As part of this discu
ssion, you will read about concepts surrounding physica
l education and evaluate your previous knowledge on th
is subject. Then, you will create your own question for y
our classmates to answer.

PED 212 Week 2 DQ 1 Motor Skills

Motor Skills. This discussion forum consists of three diff
erent sections. You must complete the requirements in
each section.
Section 1 (Post by Day 3):
Read Section 4.1, Three Elements Affecting Motor Skill
Performance, in Chapter 4 of your text. Next, use Table
3.2, Typical gross motor milestones, from Chapter 3 as
a guide, and the skills outlined in Chapter 5 and 6 to co
mplete the following chart*:Section 2 - Guided Respons
e (Post by Day 5):

PED 212 Week 2 DQ 2 Complex Skill

s
Complex Skills. According to the textbook, skill learning
takes place through a predictable and consistent seque
nce. It is also similar to that of growth and development
by how the rate of learning a skill is different across peo
ple and depends on a persons environment as well as t
heir previous experiences (Hastie, 2012).

PED 212 Week 2 Fundamental Skill

Lesson Plan
Fundamental Skill Lesson Plan. You will create a lesson
plan to teach a fundamental skill for an early childhood
physical education class (Pre-K to 3rd grade). You will re
vise/add to this lesson plan in Week Five. To create your
lesson plan, start by reviewing and assessing that the sk
ill(s) in your lesson plan are developmentally appropriat
e by visiting The National Association for Sports and Phy
sical Education (NASPE). An example of a skill is: Demo
nstrate the relationship of under, over, behind, next to,
through, right, left, up, down, forward, backward, and in
front of by using the body and an object. Then, review
Table 7.3 in Chapter 7 for appropriate activities.

Childrens Health Awareness Presentation. You have bee
n invited to speak at a community eventtopromoteawar

PED 212 Week 3 DQ 1 Class Environ

ments
Class Environments. Read in Chapter 9 about Autonomy
Supportive Environments in the classroom. Review Tabl
e 9.3 on the comparison of a controlling environment a
nd an autonomy supportive environment.
For your initial post, create a model for a physical educa
tion lesson that is being taught in a controlling environ
ment. Explain in detail how the task is introduced, taugh
t, and assessed. You must include the following criteria:

PED 212 Week 3 DQ 2 Assessment

Assessment. Assessing the mastery of a skill is an impor
tant part of any lesson. Many fundamental motor skills
are combined to create the more complex motor skills.
If a fundamental skill is not mastered, it will affect the d
evelopment of other skills as well.
In this discussion forum, you will explain how you woul
d observe, document, and assess a fundamental motor
skill. Choose a fundamental motor skill that you will ass
ess. It can be a skill previously discussed in this course
or one that has not been discussed.

PED 212 Week 4 DQ 1 The Four Ss

The Four Ss. Read the following scenario that describes
the game of Red Rover (an activity in the hall of sham
e!). Reflect on how this game violates the Four Ss as out
lined in Chapter 8: safe, success, satisfying, and skill app
ropriate.
Two teams face each other across half of a basketball co
urt and take turns calling players over from the opposit
e side. After Team A decides who it wants to challenge, t
he members join hands to form a long chain and call fo
r Team B to send Frank over. Frank then runs as fast a
s possible to either break through or dive under the cha
ins formed by Team A. If Frank fails to break through, h
e becomes part of Team A.

PED 212 Week 5 DQ 1 Play vs. Sport

s
Play vs. Sports. This week you will reflect on the debate
of organized sports vs. unstructured free play. Over the
years, parents, teachers, and researchers have weighed
the advantages and disadvantages of each in considerat
ion as to what is most appropriate for young children.
In this discussion forum you will research the issues an
d then offer the pros and cons for both organized sport
and unstructured free play in the following categories:

PED 212 Week 5 DQ 2 Professional

Associations
Professional Associations. Many professionals choose t
o join national associations that offer support and infor
mation in their field. For this discussion, you will resear
ch and analyze the benefits of a national organization th
at offers support within the physical education domain.
Choose an association to review and discuss how an ed
ucator could benefit from the various professional deve
lopment opportunities, publications, resources, advocac
y programs, and events that they offer.

PED 212 Week 5 Final Paper

You will create a comprehensive lesson plan to teach a f
undamental skill for an early childhood physical educati
on class (Pre-K to 3rd grade) by revising and adding to t
he plan you created in Week Two. Start by reviewing an
d assessing that the skill(s) in your lesson plan are devel
opmentally appropriate by visiting The National Associa
tion for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE).
Your lesson plan should include the following compone
nts (note that Sections 1 and 2 are the same as the Wee
k Two lesson plan; just be sure to include revisions and
changes).
