ABSTRACT

Current high performance computing

(HPC) applications are found in many
consumer, industrial and research fields.
these applications require large amounts
of power to run them
high performance computer help setup
and optimize the software environment
and can help trouble-shoot issues

OBJECTIVE
To introduce the big picture of high
performance computing
To develop a comprehensive
understanding of high performance
computing
To improve the manageability, power, and
availability of future computing systems
explore an option that related to
technology and infrastructure needs.

INTRODUCTION

(HPC) is the use of parallel processing

for running advanced application
programs efficiently, reliably and quickly
HPC is occasionally used as a synonym
for supercomputing

most common users of HPC

systems :

scientific researchers
engineers
academic institutions
government agencies
military

IMPORTANCE OF HPC
had tremendous impact on :
computational science
engineering in academics
Government
Industry
physical simulations

LITERATURE REVIEW

HPC were introduced in 1960s

The CDC 6600, released in 1964, is
generally considered the first
supercomputer
in the 1990s machines with thousands
of processors began to appear
Systems with massive numbers of
processors generally take one of two
paths

a large number of discrete computers

distributed across a network the devote
some or all of their time to solving a
common problem.
a large number of dedicated processors
are placed in close proximity to each
other

THEORY

HPC is a computer at the frontline of

contemporary processing capacityparticularly speed of calculation
fastest type of computer
very expensive
employed for specialized applications
HPC generally aim for the maximum
in capability computing rather
than capacity computing

Capability computing is typically thought

of as using the maximum computing
power to solve a single large problem in
the shortest amount of time
Capacity computing in contrast is typically
thought of as using efficient cost-effective
computing power to solve a small number
of somewhat large problems or a large
number of small problems

HPC is accomplished by splitting up

large and complex tasks across multiple
processors
modern massively parallel high
performance computers typically
separate computations from other
services by using multiple types
of nodes

DEVELOPMENTS AND
EXPERIMENT

Energy usage and heat management

major issue in complex electronic
devices.
powerful computer systems in various
ways packing of thousands of
processors together inevitably generates
significant amounts of heat density that
need to be dealt with.

Approaches to supercomputer
architecture have taken dramatic turns
since the earliest systems were
introduced in the 1960s
in time the demand for increased
computational power ushered in the age
of massively parallel systems.

High performance computer of the 21st

century can use over 100,000 processors
connected by fast connections
In such a centralized massively
parallel system the speed and flexibility of
the interconnect becomes very important
The use of multi-core processors combined
with centralization is an emerging direction

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

the speed of supercomputers is

measured and benchmarked in
"FLOPS" (FLoating Point Operations
Per Second).
No single number can reflect the overall
performance of a computer system
fastest supercomputers have been
ranked on the TOP500 list

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

HPC provides users with a number of key benefits

help setup and optimize the software environment
help trouble-shoot issues that might occur
run faster and give result immediately
include accounts that are provided on an
individual user basis, and users have to pay for
the time they use the service
can access from anywhere in the worlds with highspeed data transfer in and out.
